Hi All
I recently bought a 58reg D3 tdv6 es, no warranty. High mileage 160k miles, but very tidy. No scratches leather interior very clean. However a few days after I bought it I started noticing the revs fluctuating as I drove. Fine in idle. Happens at about 1500revs usually with a bit of load on.
Been doing my google research and on hear of course.
It seems it like it’s probably the torque converter or gearbox oil. I’ve read about having a mega-flush on the gear box.
So armed with this scant bit of knowledge I’ve gone down to my local independent Landrover mechanic. He immediately said torque converter but I should change the whole gearbox as the gearbox might easily fail after just changing the converter. Twice as expensive but at least I know it’s done properly. And I should check the oil pump and change it if it’s not been done.
£3200 for new box with new converter installed VAT included
£4000 with new pump as well.
Big chunk of cash for a car I’ve just bought. But it does seem in good nick (well other then the
gearbox 😂)
Does this seem a reasonable price for a new gearbox ?? He said it was a new not reconditioned one. I know people who’ve used this garage but never have myself.
On the other hand he said he can do a megaflush for £300 and it may last a few months or even years. But 160k isn’t a young gearbox.
Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated

I have an 07 plate D3 which came in at 180k miles. It would drive, but serious TC slip under load. I added ATF to the correct level, and now the problem has almost gone
May be only a temporary solution, but good enough for now. I am going to replace gearbox oil to see what difference it makes. Chris

I had precisely the same with my 2005 D3, bought at 135 000 miles. Revs bouncing at 1500 to 1800 rpm.
Take it to Bristol Transmissions, just off M32. They swapped the TC and inspected the Gearbox, which was fine, and charged about £1500 with a 12 month warranty. You're not too far from them I suspect, so we'll worth a trip. They'll take you out in the car for a test drive for nothing, just to take a look.
Mine's now done about 20,000 miles since and still running beautifully. 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

I’ve been thinking about just trying the megaflush.
Bristol transmissions came up when I was “researching” on line. It’s only an hour away from me so not far at all really. I’d like to keep the car for awhile as I’m already really enjoying a disco again. Apart from the mpg as my last car was a trip old passat estate that easily got twice the mpg. 1971 Series 2a sold (regrettably)

Chuck some drtranny in and see if it improves.
If it does improve then change gearbox oil with some more drtranny and see how long before/if the issue returns.
I would be wary of spending serious money on a new to you car with them miles, as you have no idea what may fail next.
You can string these gearboxes along for years with fresh oil and drtanny.

Mines running on Dr Tranny, torque slip was never that bad but the TC is a bit noisy as it pulls over 2k. Generally it drives very well, changes smoothly but I get a transmission fault when towing my tin tent.
My erratic revs at 1500rpm which I always put down to the TC has just got a lot better after disconnecting the plugs from my blanked EGR valves (mines an old 2005)
I’m sure at some point I will have to make the decision wether to have it done and if I do Bristol is where I’ll take it. Steve

BA transmissions in Keighley did mine (a few years back) and took my TC and fitted a re-con. Was as good as new tor the following 4 years until the timing belt came off. It was £500 all in. Prices will have gone up I am sure but worth a call if local James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Just. booked my D3 in for a transmission service at Autotrans Gloucester. Recommended by my local mechanic, who also has a D3.
They takes it for a test drive, megaflush and service. It takes all day they said as they have to let the engine cool down after running it up to temperature I believe.
I talked with another garage and they said it would take an hour. So going with the transmission specialist and longer time. 1971 Series 2a sold (regrettably)

The revs used to fluctuate on mine, I did a quick drain and refill with some dr tranny and it’s cured, that was about fifteen thousand miles ago, it’s on 173000 now and runs great, just get the rattling sound when not under load but it’s always done that. It’s a cheap way of doing it if it works and doesn’t take very long.

I changed my transmission fluid and used the dr tranny. I’d say that this is only a temp fix.
If your always travelling light it’s sorts you out for years in most cases.
If your towing heavy for longer periods of time, gearbox oil must get too hot eventually down to the worn part and you get judder and gearbox faults.

My gearbox is slipping, particularly noticeable in 4th gear, it's done 108K miles and looks to be on the original oil and filter, will be doing an oil and filter change, and I think I will change the bridge & mechatronics seals as surely the slipping and wear begins with either fluid breakdown or if the seals begin to leak pressure that causes slipping and wear?
I get no fault codes despite when being in manual 4th from off throttle to giving it a bit of acceleration it slips about 1000 RPM

Yep, it slips a bit in every gear but particularly 4th getting a GAP IID soon so will see what the adaptations are for the solenoids when I get it

Well,
Just brought my D3 to auto transmission in Gloucester. Not positive news. It’s been for a test drive, it’s the torque converter they said. I can get a mega flush plus shudder fix, not much change from £500. Reconditioned transmission £2,800 all in.
Or £3200 new gear box and torque converter from 4x4 garage I talked to first.
Thinking I will go for the flush hope it works for a while. As I’ve only owned the car for a month I think it would be wise to see if I have any other problems before I sink £3000 more into it.
If it seems ok I think a new gearbox and torque converter would be a better option as it’s only slightly more. 1971 Series 2a sold (regrettably)

Mega flush done. First test drive gearbox seems ok. Very smooth in fact. But only a 19 mile drive so will have to wait and see. 1971 Series 2a sold (regrettably)
