Sat in a Disco 5 today

Sat in a Disco 5 today. Very much like a RR but the sides narrow up into the roof and the rear side windows have 20 cm of cladding inside, so much less interior space and a longer bonnet, Frankly a big disappointment Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

That was also my experience at the local launch event last week. It looks VERY nice but interior space is extremely disappointing. I couldn't even fit behind the wheel (6'6") Confused

I was really disappointed with the second row seats, okay I'm 6'2" and long in the leg, but I felt the second row seats sat very low and didnt offer much support, they sit much lower than D4 probably done as a result of the reduced step in roof height.

If you look at the side view you can see why it has no headroom, someone chopped the roof off and put a tin sheet on top!

Scotland 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 Landmark LE Auto Yulong WhiteDiscovery 4

Sat in and had a good nose round one in Glasgow today.

2.0 Hse in silver, 21 inch alloys with black interior.

Prices are from £43k for 2.0 S model. Then SE, HSE and HSE lux.
The 2.0 is a small engine, plenty of space under the bonnet.
Windscreen washer on left side, ad blue fill on right side of engine bay sides, a charging point is under the bonnet as well. Suspension air lines are also under the bonnet.

Interior is nice, seats have finally got a decent head rest compared to the fixed ones in the 3/4.
2nd row isn't as comfy as a D3/4 as the seat foam is thinner.
2nd and 3rd row can only be lowered or raised by the electric motors. Low spec models will have a manual control and DS style strap to pull.
The tailgate is motor driven for upper and the small boot flap. Which I feel is stupid and WILL break.

Boot is 17cm wider, but not as tall, the seats folded flat don't sit as low as a 3/4 does, plus the seat back to boot seems shorter than 3/4. It's lost 50 litres of space and you won't be using it like a van like the 3/4 is.

Dash is well laid out, decent space but I'm 5.8 and under 12 stone so not the best judge for that.
Still got a few controls on a dash panel so it's thankfully not 100% touch screen. Which is miles faster than a 3/4 screen and is very up to date. Has a phone cradle built in which can take a 6S easily.
Decent cubby bins and such in it.

Front bumper sits too low for my liking. It's going to get damaged off road and imho doesn't need to be anywhere near as low.
The step in the roof is ok. It means it's 2 large glass sun roof panels instead of 3 like you got on 3/4 models. I would have brought it forward personally a bit as it doesn't seem right.
The rear doors are massive and the curve in them may make tight bays a squeeze for access.

Overall.
A nice car.
But not a Discovery as we know it. Too gimmicky and it's too mini Range Rover and less family car.
I don't think I could use one in the way I use my 3 and for it to cope.

Thanks. An interesting and balanced review Thumbs Up

Does anyone else have a dog / dogs that is / are spooked by the whirring of electric tailgate motors? My dog goes pretty much everywhere with me and he's brilliantly behaved in the back of the car but, with electric motors whirring, he'll try and jump out while the boot's closing Shocked

Also agree with the others about 2nd row of seats being much lower. When I sat in it, the back of my legs didn't touch the seat. 3rd row not as important but again the footwell is much shallower, so your knees are raised.
Only other point I didn't like was the sunroofs. I was hoping that after the Evoque, Disco Sport, Rrs etc that it would have a full length sunroof. My kids like looking up at the sky/clouds/stars etc, but from the 2nd row, the only thing you see is the one part that has no sunroof. My luggage will appreciate the pano roof though.
Oh, and the engine....but that a diff thread.
Generally though, I liked it. Not too sure the giant jump in price is worth the compromises now though. Went yesterday and sat in the Q7. Much more comfortable in 2nd row, better performance and cheaper... Just don't like the look so much.

Many thanks for sharing the report. Very interesting about interior room, especially as am 6ft4. Does anyone know how the (apparent) "competition" fairs in the 2nd row compared to the new D5? Such as the XC90, Q7, X5 and even the FFRR?
