Tips needed
Hi all
How do people tow loaded trailers, to reduce strain when pulling off please?
Do you raise the clutch and roll them accelerate. Or clutch and accelerate together please?
I know reversing trailer up a ramp is low range and no revs just clutch. But I’m wondering forwards up hill pull off in high range please.
Also is it safe to use cruise control whilst towing?
Any other tips to reduce strain on the car in relation to towing please? Tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated

I use a front tow bar for manoeuvring my trailers up hill, makes it so much easier

Maybe misunderstood. I mean towing on a road uphill like normal. But just the general method of clutch and acceleration balance / timing.
Do people Rev and raise the clutch up together. Or just clutch up and no revs to get some motion then accelerate once rolling a bit. If that makes sense now?
I was told if I Rev and bring clutch up to pull off it causes more strain on clutch cable or somethingDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

Just towed a 1500kg caravan back from the Derbyshire dales, there were some nasty hill starts out of T-junctions!
Don't use revs, you'll burn the clutch faces. Use some revs (1500ish) and get the car moving, let the clutch right out, and use the engines torque to accelerate with.Richard

Sorry that I don’t get. You say don’t use revs and then do use revs?Disco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

I assume you've driven a manual car before?
1500revs isn't much, compared to 4500 revs. Much less than 1500, and you'll stall it with a heavy trailer.Richard

Yeah I can drive. But I’m wanting to ensure I understand how this model of car is best to tow 3.5 tonnes up hills and other worst case scenarios that I inevitably have to drive.
I usually Rev up to 2000ish and let the clutch up to bite with high revs
But I’m told it can damage the clutch and cause stress.
Then I’m told on here that reversing up a ramp is best idle no revs just clutch
So I’m wondering if forward up hill is best the same idle low revs just clutch
Only a small difference I guess I’m asking do people Rev and clutch up to pull off or just clutch up slowish for motion then accelerate onwards smoothDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

Try to pull away with the minimum revs you can get away with in order to look after the clutch. When I had a manual D3, I used to tow at 3500kg and if there was no rush then I would pull away with minimal revs even if it takes a little longer to get up on boost.
If you need a quick get away or an uphill get away then you can use low range, you can whip though the gears then drop into neutral, select high range and pop it into the relevant gear for your speed.Stu

Cheers - I won’t be rushing.
So it’s the same forward as reverse towing heavyweight - ease up clutch and let it do the initial pulling. Then ease speed up with revs
And thanks I didn’t think of switching range! This will no doubt come in use!
Next up find an axle weight bridge and load it properly distributedDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

...and you can change to high range on the move up to 40mph, well with an auto box you can don't know about a DIY box on a D3.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
