Buying my first Discovery 3
Hi All,
I'm going to look at my first D3 with the potential to purchase tomorrow. Spoken to the seller over the phone a few times, selling from AutoTrader at a great price with low mileage for 07 plate, new engine was put in after a servicing error by Land Rover in 2012 see invoice attached.
My Question is, I wondered if anyone could offer me some advice on what to look out for when looking around & listen for when test driving tomorrow - I've found the below, if anyone can add to it that would be a great help -
- Cam belt changed?
- Air ride suspension system - all settings
- Air Conditioning
- Oil leaks underneath
- Gearbox noises
- Central locking/electric windows all/rear wiper
Best,
Toby

As with buying and disco make sure all the buttons work and that the compressor does it's job in raising/lowering the suspension.
Can't tell from the invoice but also make sure that the new style oil pump has been fitted as the old style will shear and ruin and engine.
Happy hunting Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector
Limo Tint
Blackvue front & rear dashcam
Cruise control switch pack
Bodsy's remote for FBH

Cheers Ian,
Will do, do you know what the visual differences are between the old & new Oil pump so I can tell easily?
Best,
Toby

Hi
Just made the picture a bit sharper for u , ref the oil pump, here’s some pics, the upgraded one has stronger casting across the top , that’s to prevent the belt tensioner breaking off
Plus wow, a £6.5k invoice for the engine work
Hope that helps

No worries Stuart
At least we are both giving him the same advice - whether it's correct or not is a totally different question Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Thanks fellas, really appreciate your help!
Can I see the oil pump with the bonnet open or is this something that needs seeing with it up in the air?
Thanks again

Here’s a link showing a belt change but shows what needs to come off to access it , often wonder if using one of those small endoscopes may help
Others should be able to advise better if u can just loosen the top timing belt cover and if there’s enough room to get an endoscope down to check what oil pump type u have

That's great thanks for the link.
I'm looking at it tomorrow, it has a full service history so it 'should' state when & if the oil pump & belts have ben changed. If not, I'll get it to the garage for a look over, dependent on length from service. I might just get them to give it the once over!
Thanks again for the help!

Ur very welcome
Must admit as ian mentioned can’t see it on the invoice , indeed get it checked for peace of mind particularly as urs is a 2007
Fingers crossed it’s the new style pump , would be very surprised after rebuilding the engine if they fitted an old oil pump but alas won’t know until checked
Plse let us know how u get on

@gstuart
Just to let you know, I purchased the 07 D3 & its in fantastic condition, 1 owner from new & they've have really looked after it. There are a few dints & scratches which I will sort but it runs perfectly well & sounds amazing.
I've got it booked in to make sure the Oil pump is the newest version for peace of mind! I've already started to look at upgrading interior lights to the LED versions & a few other elements.
Thanks again for all the advice you gave, its really appreciated!
Best,
TNew Owner of a 07 D3 XS Buckingham Blue.
Apologies for asking too many questions!
