You can't without causing lots of issues with the rest of the electronics on the car, and also I don't think you'd get away with it legally as you can't display a warning on the dash board. Finally, you're trying to replace a brake system that cost well over £1M to develop and control a 3tonne plus vehicle. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Never say never, some clever sod will do it, or most likely already has.

I like the EPB i find it works really well.
I service and adjust it every 12 months and so far have had no issues. Andrew

Applying EPB while driving tells me that it is quite powerful/ effective. I doubt that an improvised setup could achieve anywhere near the same mechanical advantage and braking force. Chris

a good old cable on a lever got my 3 tonne land cruiser sideways many many times and that was just a single brake drum on the rear prop shaft. It would lock up the rear axel at speed no problem.
Mechanically it could easily be done to the disco, the switch activates a motor that pulls on cables attached to the rear shoes. That motor could be replaced with a simple lever / cable setup and a switch to bring the light up on the dash. Like we had decades ago.....
Then to make it legal you would have to have it re tested and certified by the DVSA. That would be a cost and so would explaining the mod to the insurers every year.... and i guess the EPB would also have to be deleted off the car's software..... it becomes cheaper to simply fix what's there already.
But i too, would much rather have a simple lever.

That is because the EPB applies all four main brakes not just the little brake shoes in the brake drum.

I can remember the first time I tried that!
Always makes me chuckle when people say they bed the handbrake shoes in by applying the handbrake x amount of times, drums and shoes can take hundreds of miles of regular driving to bed in, never mind handbrake shoes that pretty much never actually run against a moving drum.

The correct procedure does exactly that, obviously you haven’t read Bodsy’s Brake Bible or changed the brake shoes. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

But you or I doesn’t want to end up sideways in an emergency stop, the D3/4 is unique as the handbrake is two stage, first stage is a parking brake working on the rear drums only, in comes on automatically when the engine stops, this alone has its benefits if the vehicle is hit at high speed when parked up and left in gear but DOES NOT HAVE THE PARK BRAKE ON there is risk of transmission damage, it can release manually or automatically without driver intervention which is very useful when starting off on a hill for instance.
Now the good bit that no other domestic vehicle I know does, if the park brake is operated whilst in motion not only do the rear drums operate but THE FOOT BRAKE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM IS OPERATED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS ALONG WITH THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM.
If the handbrake is maintained correctly it will last the life of the car, it is only poor or no maintenance that causes problems, after 16 years of Disco 3/4 ownership I give the handbrake 10/10. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
