Not sure what the draw is for a vehicle with a replacement engine. Are they much cheaper perhaps?
I'd much rather look for an original D4 with a good service record. It's true that some fail, tell me a car where that doesn't happen. But the percentage is small.
Anyway, what would you prefer? An original factory fitted engine, where they do that day in day out, a dealer fitted engine (they will be trained, and might have done a few but mostly will service your car and fit peripheral things that go wrong) or someone else whose fitted an engine?

Fair question, I was just wondering whether having had a replacement engine was perhaps an especially positive sign - renewed all the parts that may have worn out by now. But I think I will be avoiding D4s with replaced engines of any type based on all the advice here...

Thing is nowadays with modern vehicles engines do not really wear out like days of old, there is always some other part that fails making the car unecomical to repair.
I have always said repaired/remanufactured/recon etc, none are as good as it left the factory with.

I was in this situation when I bought my D4 5 years ago, I very nearly bought a D4 with a new engine fitted by LR it had been caused by going to deep into water and was an insurance claim(flood damage) I still have a copy of the invoice was for £22,000 It can when others can't,

Now the plot thickens, lol. The original question was focused on a new engine…. not about flood damage.

I went through the same questions when I bought my D4, I would say if its a JLR engine, fitted by a main dealer, and properly documented then you are good.
Anything else avoid.
Depending on dates and age you could save on an expensive 7 year belt change, as it should have been changed when the dealer fitted the new engine (make sure you have proof of this if so). 2014 D4 HSE Facelift Corris Grey
