Bottom ball joint replacement |
|
Just passed MOT but with bottom ball joint advisory.
Has anyone changed the ball joint in-situ?
Yes I know new control arms are cheap and yes I know if the ball joint has gone the bushes on the control arm are also on the way out but with rusted in bolts and potentially having to cut off control arms that is a whole new level of pain.
Given someone may have done it I am willing to invest in a ball joint press tool. I do have a 20 tonne press but you can't attach that to a control arm on the car ........

Yeah I did the lower one in situ a couple of months back and it wasnt too bad - it needed a fair amount of force and grease on the clamp thread. I think this is the press set I have - the clamp and receiving cup need to be large. Ebay eBay Item No. 373365125096

Yes its quite easy if you have a big hammer and a big socket or a round bar . I use a round bar that just fits inside the top of the ball joint to knock it out.
You then need a large socket or tube to knock it back in from the under side.
I use one of my axle stands to make the lower arm solid with the tube underneath on the ball joint, then a large socket on the top of the arm to drive the ball joint up through the arm.
Then secure it with the circlip.
