Hi All.
Hope you’re all keeping safe and well.
I e just had the D4 MOT’d and it FAILED! On inner break shoes and a bush for the rear upper Not too bad for an 11 year old HOWEVER!!
I could hear a grinding noise coming from one of the wheels but as I wasn’t using it very often so I thought I’d wait until the MOT
What peed me off the most was the damage the inner shoes caused to the brand new (less than 500 miles working from home) rear discs. They think one must have been very loose inside as the scoring on the inner shoe was realllly bad. OOPS! 2010 D4 XS

The pads must have been very thin when replacing the discs to cause damage after 500 miles??? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

It looked like they’d never been changed. The same indie changed the discs back last year but didn’t mention anything about the shoes. They did look very worn.
But the chap thought they’d come loose somehow causing the grinding noise hence the inner shoe wear.

I feel your pain just had the same but on the front discs - pads worn down to metal and scored the discs
I don't understand it really as I don't really use the brake pedal just the accelerator mainly
|

I thought it was a 'golden rule' never to re-install used pads into a new disc installation.
The pad face would not sit well on a new smooth disc "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"
Current Ride: D4 XS Commercial Baltic Blue SDV6 fully loaded with heated everything
Track Days: BMW E36 M3 Evolution MY 1996 (3.2 Litre 377 BHP sat in 1,250 Kgs of car, with a pro safety cage and some serious braking power)

Some confusion here I think. The OP has mentioned shoes twice but the comments are on pads.
Most likely cause of OPs damage failure of shoe retaining spring through corrosion.
Usual cause of excessive pad wear sticking caliper, piston or sliding pins. Alternatively pads sticking in dirty tracks.

Yes, new brake pads are fine on serviceable discs, but new discs should have new pads fitted regardless of the state of the existing pads. (I also change the brake fluid when fitting new discs, or every 4 years). PAGODA

I should mention the hand brake shoes on the inner hub. Sorry for any confusion. Either way it hurt my bloody wallet 2010 D4 XS

Yes the shoes fail, either the retainer or the material itself. In my case the material was breaking up and pieces would jam between shoe and drum making the noise you mention. After a while it would pass as the material would turn to dust and the drum surface would score. And then a little while later, another chunk would break off and I’d go through it again. It bites again.
Spent the morning yesterday trying to get the drivers side front wheel off to change discs and pads. One swollen nut!! (Not the type to make you speak in a high pitched Voice) and several swear words later I managed to pop the cap off and get the wheel off.
Lovely!!
Rear calliper bolts out, pads and springs off. No chance in hell could I get the other 2 carrier bolts off even with my breaker bar on them.
Replaced it all an wheels back on to book it back into my Indy!!
Time to invest in an impact wrench I think! 2010 D4 XS
