engine failure

discovery 3 - 7 a chassis -56 plate 178000 miles

I have unfortunately jinxed my disco 3 to many times and on Friday the oil pump failed causing catastrophic engine failure.
the car was on the motorway but accelerating from 60 to 70 gently and then boom it happened.

didn't even know about the oil pump faults or I would have changed it.

rebuild or second hand engine?

If it "let go" at 70mph the engine is scrap no point in even stripping all down other than just interest, another lump is required.

Sell your disco as it is or strip for parts. Repairing will not be cost effective....

Yupp.. .

If you wait a while, there will be somebody coming in, who will say, maybe if you are lucky....

Then you will maybe try to fit a new oilpump and new belt and roller kit and maybe more... and than you have to see if you were lucky...
if not, and i bet on that... you still have to change the engine and dismount and fit a new oilpump, seals, belts, rollers...

Depending off what you can do yourself... minimum budget should be from 4k on....

If your valves are bent... a low mileage JAG engine would be your best best i think, since low mileage LR engines, are not there or much more expensive, much more..

(Been there, done it)
 Best regards
Harold

A good used engine supplied and fitted (with new oil pump and belts etc) with some guarantee from a reputable Indie is going to be upwards of £4k. Spending less means more risk of repeated failure sooner or later.

£4k plus current value of broken D3 might be close to price of a similar replacement. Perhaps one like this,

You might be lucky but i doubt it very much, i would buy yourself a cheap Jaguar s type and remove the engine.
It will be the cheaper option than buying an engine on its own from a Discovery.

Sorry to hear that. Sadly it’s now scrap unless you want to do an engine transplant from an S Type Jag but the cost to value ratio is skewed against you. Sad
