Dodgy start

Hi all

Started the car today on 0 degrees

Was very ‘sputtery’? Took 3-4 try’s.

Then when I revved slightly it almost died. And I could hear liquid movement! Like whenever I revved there was the sound of liquid flowing. No idea where from.

Car then worked fine returning home 15 minutes later.

Is this a bad sign please or a common thing?

Never heard liquid on revving before so confusing!

Did you leave it until the glowplug light went out? It could be the glowplugs starting to fail if you did.

What strength is your antifreeze? The noise could be the water starting to freeze.

I don’t think I did think I waited for it to go out on the attempts after though.

Is antifreeze the coolant? Sorry if that’s a stupid question haha

I did flush my matrix with water twice last week so maybe the mix has been watered down too much?

Yeah, coolant or antifreeze is used interchangeably and [should] mean the same thing.

How much water did you introduce into your coolant circuit? Shocked

If you've been flushing the matrix you may still have air in the system which could explain the noise

The water noise is most likely trapped air if you flushed your heater, it can be a pain to get it all out.

In cold weather you need to let the light go out before attempting to start the engine, it should then start first time

Cheers all

I just left the water that was in the matrix thinking it didn’t seem like a lot and would dilute the coolant. Not thinking it would make any difference. Lesson learned.

And I have bled the air valve bit more times than I can remember with a recent issue.

I’ll bleed it again, go for a drive, bleed it again. Check the top chamber in the coolant reservoir etc.

Not today though as it’s ridiculously cold 😂

Hi

If it helps and for piece of mind eBay do cheap testers so then at ur know 100% the antifreeze is at the correct concentration, think it should be 50/50 oats

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverline-Anti....l4275.c10

Hopefully someone else can verify that’s correct please

Incorrect coolant I think
If the coolant was orange or pink then that’s what you need to top up. (Called 5 year OAT)

Otherwise you will get more sludge !

Me, I would drain it all and fill with one correct mix rather than mix brands. The colour I use is the red variety that has a 6 or 8 year life. Either buy 5 litres of concentrate or 10 litres of ready mix.

Thumbs Up I agree you can’t take chances with antifreeze, using or mixing the wrong antifreeze can do serious long term damage to internal components.
It is also not recommended to rev a cold engine after first starting, fast tick over only. The glow plugs continue to heat the engine for a preset time after the engine has started, it sounds like you have some not working.

 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

No! Shocked That’s MEG and you want OAT. If you want comma for your vehicle, get Xstream G30. It’s a concentrate so you MUST to mix it 50/50 with de-ionized water. Obviously there are other mixing ratios as well but 50/50 is an okay default rule for most users.

As others have said, don’t mix brands blindly Thumbs Up
