Single fault - multiple systems

Hi All

I just wondered if anyone had had similar to the following...

Note car had a new battery last spring. New brake light switch this summer. No issues starting, locking, etc.

In the summer I started getting multiple warning lights, including DSC, suspension in low, etc. I changed the brake light switch, which didn't cure it immediately, but after a week it went away.

A couple of weeks ago a fault developed which displays the following symptoms (not all at once, sometimes some come and go):

1. Vehicle won't change gear properly. Revs high and needs to be driven in 'manual' mode (If #3 occurs, then the gear changes work properly again!)
2. Suspension drops to low level (Sometimes it shows an error, sometimes it doesn't)
3. Dashboard warning lights -DSC, ABS, (!)
4. Brake lights come on all the time
5. Trailer electrics cut out (seems to relate to brake light issue).

The local specialist checked the fault codes and found an issue with the main communication sensor (of course, car was behaving fine when I took it there!). The have suggested replacing this may solve the problem, but would would like to know if anyone else has experienced this before I go down this route.

At this time of year, the trailer light/brake light fault is the most concerning.

Thaks
Richard

Sounds like a fault with the brake light circuit, was the switch a genuine one or cheap ebay one?

Do you have a genuine towbar electrics fitted or aftermarket, if its aftermarket it could be a faulty bypass relay feeding power to the brake light circuit

you probably need to adjust the brake light switch.

Do you pull the plunger on these and then refit them ?

otherwise maybe the HDC ecu

I had something similar for about a year to the point that something was happening every day. Car would get stuck in one gear, high/low revs, alsorts of warning lights, etc. I had a new battery and changed the brake light switch but it still happened. I ended up buy an iid tool for about £50 to read all the codes (which is well worth it if you can get one!), but ended up taking it to a local specialist in the end. They found a steering sensor fault and a fault in one rear brake light - actually in the light box at the back of the car, not the brake light switch, but that didn't fix it either. Then they started looking at the fuel pumps, which can cause all this also, but it ultimately turned out to be the fuel rails. Had them replaced and nothing since.

I'd get an iid tool or get it read first, then clear all the errors and see what comes back. That'll help narrow it all down.

Have you checked the battery voltage and the alternator voltage. Battery with nothing switched on should be 12.4 to 12.8 volts. After starting, battery should read around 14.4 volts if alternator is okay.
