Discovery 4 all terrain tyres (none approved)
Hi
The tyres fitted to my 2016 Discovery are Goodyear 255/55 R19 111V
I
need to replace the tyres and would like to fit the vehicle with Scorpion All Terrain Plus which has a speed rating of H. All other true all terrain tyres I have seen seem to be H or lower.
I have been in contact with the Land Rover product team and this is their reply :-
The tyres fitted to this car on July 14 2016 were 255/55 R19 111 V.
The tyres fitted could have been either of the following;
1.Goodyear Wrangler HP AW All Terrain
2.Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Terrain or
3.The Continental All season tyre.
Specific tyres like the space saver and winter tyres are designed for unique operating conditions and have limitations outside of this envelope but are catered for by road laws and accepted by insurance companies.
We do not recommend the customer fits an unapproved Land Rover tyre as this will take the vehicle away from what we originally signed off with the authorities and could make the vehicle unsafe on the road so therefore we as the manufacture are unable to comment on alternative tyres.
In official Land Rover advertising, youtube and TV we have all seen and heard of off road feats by Discovery 4's, wading rivers, forest roads, mud terrains, rocky outcrops etc. Surley these vehicles would have been shod with appropriate tyres by Land Rover ?
I obviously don't want to run foul of my car insurance or extended warranty if anything should happen to my Discovery 4.
Any advice or recommendations will be most appreciated in order to get over the problem. What have other Disco 4 owners done ?
Best wishes to you all
David

Don’t worry about it, AT tyres won’t affect your insurance or warranty as long as they are the right size & weight rating. Re speed rating, it’s like winter tyres, usually a lower rating, never had an issue with that. The above is just JLR covering their arrases, esp considering the number of times they use “unapproved” tyres on their own vehicles when it suits them.

Hi DSL
Thanks for the quick reply., it's very much appreciated. Do you think I should let my insurers know about the tyre change just to cover myself ?
Best wishes

Always worth a phone call if you’re worried about it. I never bothered as kept to standard sizes as in the manual, whether it was road tyres, ATs or Muds.
if it helps ... 2011 handbook says, under Winter Tyres, ...255/65r19 111H goodyear Ultra Grip
the 65 profile seems odd but the H rating reflects what you're finding , i.e. lower speed rating..

Hi Guys
Phoned my insurance company, they said no problem re tyres as long as they were the same size. Ordered some Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tyres for fitting on Monday.
Many thanks for all the help and advice it's been very much appreciated.

As stated ,its JLT covering themselves. I had a D1 and fitted the LR approved antiroll bar kit, which stated in the instructions must be used with 235/70 x 16 tyres. I worked at LR at the time & asked why this was, as we were selling vehicles with various tyre combination 205x16 upward & they all now had antiroll bars. Was advised that the kit had only been tested on a vehicle with 235/70 x16 tyres and no others, so the legal advise was to state that 235's must be used with the kit.
