Occasional (rare) blast of smoke from exhaust

Hi There

I’ve had a good look at other posts and can’t quite find the same problem as I’m having. Every now and again I get a sudden blast of smoke from the exhaust, lasts a few seconds at most then all is clear. Each time has been either when travelling at speed on motorway or when building speed on an A road. There’s no loss of performance and it’s not a frequent occurrence. A mate said it could be the DPF Clearing but the amount of smoke seems a bit excessive to me, was like a smoke screen from Bond’s Aston today!

Any thoughts or advice most welcome. Thanks all!

Thanks pal, could well be that. The mod loooks a bit behind my capability so will be a call to my Indy next week 👍

I think its the cheapest fix to try first. Did mine on my D4 and it rectified the same issue. Although i did enjoy smoking everyone Laughing

Thanks Xed Sal, I could give it a go I guess. Been reading more of the other posts on the subject, do you know if the mod needs to be done as preventative maintenance or is it just a aesthetic thing ie to stop smoking everyone from time to time? Also another thing I haven’t been able to fathom out yet is why does the problem take several years to develop? Mines an early 2012 with 95k on the clock. Any thoughts?

Cheers!

I did mine myself. If you can follow instructions and can use basic tools, you'll be fine. It's just a bit awkward lying down to work and the starter motor is the most fiddly bit, but only because the gap is a bit small so requires wiggling to get it out. You'll need extensions for your ratchets just to make access to the nuts and bolts easier.

Yep, as folk have already said, almost certainly an issue with the secondary turbo drain. I had mine done a few months back and its been perfect ever since. I did ask the indy garage why some needed it and other not and he likened it to the artery calcification as you get older and not everyone suffers. Mine had also started to use quite a bit of oil (which I assume was then being fired out the exhaust in great clouds of smoke) and since then, very little useage.
