Disco 3 discovery 2007 2.7 ltr timing belt change
If doing a timing belt change does the timing belt cover plate need renewing. Told around this year it was prone to breaking and causing belt and engine damage
Also does the starter motor have to be removed on this model
Thanks

I presume you are referring to the oil pump? If it has not already been done then the answer is yes as there are prone to snapping where the TB tensioner mounts, particularly for 07 MY vehicles!
Make sure you fit an original LR (FoMoCo) modified pump as well as the belt, idlers, and tensioner. The rear high pressure fuel pump belt and tensioner may also need changing but this is not timed on the D3, and is not prone to any problems, other than being awkward to do. The OEM manufacturer for the belts, pulleys etc is Dayco.
There is a forum discount available to you for parts from sponsors Advanced Factors, and there is a "How to" for replacing the belts by Disco Mikey in the wiki section if you do a search. The flywheel must be locked if you're changing the oil pump and you'll need new a crank sprocket bolt as you must not reuse the old one. So starter has to come out for that and the locking tool and cam locking pins are also available from Advanced Factors

I have arranged to have the timing belt done with two landrover mechanics who have set up their own business, very experienced. Told them about the oil pump mod and new rensioner pulley etcetera
They said it is my choice but they do not usually fit oil pumps as they have never had any problems.
I am a bit confused now

I'd be looking for another garage if I were you, especially if they are claiming to be LR mechanics and then saying they never heard of the oil pump issue. Plus if they've never done a D3 oil pump don't let them near it!!
If you do a search on here and you'll see how prolific the problem is.

“Old skool” “Landy” boys? So they never seen a disco 3, they probably do not like them either..
Stay away if they give you such an answer imho...
If you listen to them, and it breaks anyway, i recon they are not going to pay or help you out for free 8)Best regards

I have looked at this prior to taking it to them. They said they would fit one if I wanted to . So I will have them fit it . I fully understand the modification and I think it is silly not to do it
Looking at oil pumps there is quite a variation in price
Are some from China. Have a new Steering pump I was going to fit, had problem with existing, but some are Chinese. Not sure if these are any good. Would bearing hold up??

Please read above! Profsrg g, dit point out exactly which one you need... FoMoCo
(Or the russian upgraded one)
Stay away from Chinese rubbish, for any driveline part.. i can not say it enough....
Made in china CAN be ok, if a major parts supplier does the end control... what is on ebay, ali or others is the rubbisch with Chinese end control (and sucs our economies empty)Best regards

It is not a modification - it is a new oil pump - only use the genuine Ford oil pump (I under stand only through LR suppliers at considerable expense - here in Aust available through Ford for 1/3 the LR cost for the exact same part.
As the others have said, ditch these mechanics and go to someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks for the replies chaps
I am an ex engineer and understand the ethics of what you are saying. Gone into the mechanics of it and can see the modification of strenthening the pump.
I was caught out years ago with Chinese crap imports. They started importing bearings and of course they were far cheaper than UK . The only problem was they broke down in next to no time
All Chinese is throw away rubbish
Cheers

I had the same response from a fairly well known Indy in the Glasgow area, I decided against using them for any work after their response to the oil pump.
The oil pump really is the heart of your engine and in fact the entire vehicle, as the crank seal has to be fitted exactly in the correct spot or you may have to have the job done twice, I'm afraid like the majority of comments I would be taking my business elsewhere and finding someone capable of doing the job, who is aware of the pitfalls of not doing the pump.
From bitter experience, although not the oil pump, I do know what it is like to have an engine failure in one of these beasts.

You might find it useful to read the thread "oil pump belts etc" started by Bazross 16/9/20. This details his experience of initially fitting non genuine parts, poor advice from "experienced" mechanics and having to redo the work multiple times.
Summarizing the recommendations that should lead to a leak free engine which will not self destruct:
Get a genuine FoMoCo oil pump, (available from AF factors @ £129 less forum discount).
Use a genuine crank oil seal and insist on the fitting of a new crank pulley bolt, (also available from AF).
Employ somebody who has access to the specialised tools for crank locking, (1) and oil seal fitting, (2 costing £190 less discount).
AF have a very good guide to fitting an oil pump.
I have to agree with those recommending that you use a garage or independent mechanic that is more familiar with the D3/4.
