I have requested an answer to this from HMRC, but not holding my breath, so thought there may be a knowledgeable person on here...
If I were to make a purchase abroad today and complete all financial transactions including arranging temporary storage is the country of sale, but then couldn’t import the items for 4-6 months due to COVID restrictions, would I be liable to import duty based on the date of completing the purchase, or as I suspect the date of import?
Considering buying something in Germany at present, but need to bring it back in the car and won’t at present be able to do it until next year after we‘ve left the EU - worst case assumption being without any deal.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Any purchase tax will be payable at the time of sale
Import tax will only be applicable at the time you physically cross in to the UK with it.
If it's post a No Deal Brexit than any duty will be applicable at the time of import, not the time of purchase

Your man of the vague illumination is correct.
Import transaction happens at point of Frontier declaration in a simple transaction such as this. Taxes and tariffs will change through brexit. yeah if it were me and it were a secondhand object I'd be tempted to "green channel" on the way back05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system

I know what you meant, but not going to work, it‘s two pallets of wine from a vineyard local to friends place. They offered to store it FOC for me until we can get there again. No worries, price won’t change, just hoping to avoid import dutyLRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

If its Booze you'd get stuck with duty in that quantity anyway when wine gets to pallet quantities the "personal use" exemption gets a bit sticky
that said when I was at Uni we did have a bit of fun once, we calculated the maximum number of bottles of beer we could fit in my Land Rover product of the time and had a bet with the local pub landlord. He bet we couldn't, we bet we could without any breakage or spillage.
we won but it was a bit "squeaky bum" going over the ferry ramps and it did take us 5 hours to load and another 5 to unload.05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system

I haven’t had any issues in the past - have had D4 boot and backseat full plus the same amount in the trailer behind. It does appear to help that I have a German Passport and usually a load of other goodies I can’t buy in the Uk with me.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
