So then, with the hole in the EGR pipe, on the drivers side of both of your cars, this looks like it could be a common problem wouldn't you say?
I'm having the same symptoms as you both described.
Couple of questions...
Is there a quick and easy way for me to have a feel around and locate the pipe and feel for a suspected hole without taking half of the car apart (bearing in mind that it's -2 degrees outside?
How much did it cost or how /easy/difficult was it to have fixed?
Out of interest, what was the mileage on your cars at the time?
Thanks
Les
Hello Les. Mileage was 116k. Cost to repair was £1100 but that included the EGR valve also. The LR EGR comes with the pipe. I figured when they were that far in they may as well replace all at the same time.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
I had put £1k aside for ‘contingencies’ when I bought the car. Looks like I’ll be using it in one go!
I’ll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again. Back in the game!

Just read this. I don't know whether it's feasible, but is it not possible to fix the hole where it is, rather than replace that pipe if it's such a problem to replace? Maybe it's not, just a thought, feel free to ignore if that isn't possible for some reason that escapes me for the moment..

Hi Guys! I have the same problem for a long time... Particularly strong exhaust fume smell on start up & idle. Did you ever identify the problem? My car has been serviced and the injection nozzles and boost pump are new. fault code currently U2023
Note: there are no leaks in the tubes, some people say could be the fuel temperature
