Replacing Fog Lights with LEDs
Hi all
My D3 fog lights are shot. Usual corrosion mess. Decided to try replacing them with an LED plus DRL package from Simon at Powerful. Nice looking kit, well thought through etc. Bought a few bits from him before and quite impressed.
Fitted the units but only plugged them into the existing fog light sockets. Didn’t wire them up for the DRL function - I assumed that they should work as a stand alone fog light until I sorted out the location of the wiring and how to properly tap into the D3 circuits - I despise scotchloks! All went well on the drive and lights came on as fogs when switched on. Big tick for stage one.
A day later and I am getting Christmas trees on the dash. Engine fault, gearbox fault, suspension faults, HDc and special modes fault resulting in limp home mode. Stop the car and reset - goes away for a while but returns after a short while. Lights not on, no fogs, no sidelights.
Took the units out and reinstalled the failed LR ones. So far today no Christmas tree lights.
So by elimination it looks like the fog DRL package is the problem.
Two questions from me to the gurus out there:
1) I know the D3 is fussy on what bulbs are used in the brakes etc but don’t understand why a circuit that is not energised (fog lights not on) should mess up the engine management system; and
2) is there someone near Sevenoaks with an IID tool that I could pop round to to check the faults just in case it’s all coincidental and I have a bigger problem just waiting to happen whilst I am stuck up a hill somewhere and limp home is not going to work
Many thanks in advance

I recently changed my fogs for DRL/fogs combined and didn't have any issues other than getting an aluminium disk made to ensure that the new (4 screws) lights were able to mount in the old (3 screws) holes (I have some left if you're interested?), it also allows adjustment once the lights are mounted to get the angle right for the fogs
The connector for the fogs only seemed to fit one way but has been a good fit once the connection has been made, I bought mine from Bearmach if that helps...
I had my DRLs done by a local auto electrical place to save issues
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

The fog light wiring is incredibly basic and its not fussy.
I think its coincidence myself. But you will find out for sure.

Agreed - which is why it’s perplexing me.
So back to “has anyone near Sevenoaks got an IID tool that we can put it on”?D3 - 2008.5MY HSE, Stornaway Grey, RSE etc - all the toys

Hi andy
I have got an iid if u want urs plugging in
I’m self isolating and because of my back I’m not driving at the moment but if ur up this way , swanley , I would be more than happy to plug the iid in for u
Also wondering if it’s worth bringing the led light with u so we could plug the iid in again to see if there’s any change ref codes
Plse feel free to send me a pm and I’ll send u my address and will help all I can
Hope that helps
Ps, double checked and can do the following on other D3’s
Full diagnostic capabilities (free of charge on any supported vehicles for the IIDTool BT)
• Fault read / clear
• Live values
• Control outputs
• Service / test functions (this includes service interval reset)
The tests alas I can only do to my own disco
Advanced programming functions
• Suspension height modification
• ECU Flash
• Car Configuration File editing
• Component and system calibration (steering angle sensor calibration etc)
• Advanced functions including backup / restore, save profiles – vehicle system settings and
configurations are read and stored as a backup file for a restore function, various changes
