Steering rack - should I be worried?

Hi

I took the front underbody shield off the old girl at the weekend (dropped a spanner - don’t ask!) and noticed that the bottom of the steering rack was a bit oily. No drips on the underbody tray - just a general oily dampness around the rack where the nut is at the end of the column. Photo attached.

No loss of fluid that I can see and as I say, Nothing on the underbody pans

Is this a rack in need of replacement?

Cheers

Andy

Undo the clamp and pull the steering gater off the rack if its full of oil you need a new rack

Sometimes this can just be where the grease to the inner tie rod has broken down over the years and seeped out from the boot.

Oh I see.

I think that's the preload adjustment. There's a gasket under there that's probably leaking slightly. If it's only a weep and there's nothing wrong with the rack, I would be inclined to clean it and just leave it.

It could be another leak from above, are you losing any oils?

Nope - power steering fluid is all fine. No drips on the undertrained or surrounding metalwork (see photo)

Suspect it’s just a slight weeping gasket tbh

Had her since new, 179k of great miles, love her to bits. She gets tender loving care and a few treats when she behaves well and that seems to keep me in good stead. Just had all the rear brake system replaced including the parking brake module so she has been a little spoilt recently. Oh, and a new rear brake pipe as the old one had whatever the brake pipe equivalent is of tin worm!

Next up at some point is the rear air con lines and a new drivers seat lower frame.
