A-pillar trim falling off

Hi all

The exterior A-pillar trim keeps blowing off when travelling over 50mph.

I ordered the replacement clips which I have now, but on removing the trim it looks like the rubber 'grommit' that they clip into have worn away somewhat.

I've had a look online but can't find a way to replace this, has anyone got any tips on what I can use to refurbish it?

I was thinking some kind of builder's putty?! I thought about superglue before but I suspect it's too brittle.

Thanks

Photos???

Not sure what you are talking about. The A-Pillar exterior trim uses holes in the A-Frame and the clips to hold it in place. Are you saying that the holes in the A frame are larger than the clip will lock into?

Maybe a couple pictures would help. I don't remember a Grommet in there.

The holes in the A frame have a rubbery plastic disc which the trim clips into. The 'X' pattern has worn away on those discs, so the clips have nothing to grip to.

I'll take some pics later.

I had the same issue, almost lost it during a dust storm in the desert. After many attempts at fixing it I can tell you the only proper way is replacing it. I got a set of new ones and the difference is night and day. The rubber seal along the glass is much tighter and the trim doesn't flex too much.

Grommets

Well, I guess I am no help for you as I don't remember mine having any rubber grommets. I also looked in the repair manual and there is no mention of a grommet, of coarse illustrations are not A quality. I have wires run down my right side trim, and recently had some leaks in the front pass side. Figuring it came from the trim I used some GOOP sealant and ran a bead of it all around the perimeter of the trim, Its still removable but not ready to reseal/remove at this time.
Maybe we have different years or I just can't remember the grommets, or that's why I thought I needed the sealant, missing all the grommets?
I did get new clips, but saw no grommets to buy.
Now this has become more interesting.

Finally got around to taking some pics...

These are the plastic grommets I was talking about:

Some are worse than others, the bottom one being the worst:

Is this a DIY-able job? Anyone know how to refurb/replace them?

Cheers

When my windscreen with was replaced with a new Pilkington screen they had a kit (DHB500400) which contained everything, I think, to re-fix the A pillar outside trim.

Not on mine

Yea I don't have those on my A-Pillars. Either one, and my clips fit fine.
Must be a different model year.
Could it be possible that due to rust someone placed them in to make the clips fit. I certainly don't have them and I guess they are not needed cause like I say mine stayd put and the clips are pretty tight. Were there any wire run under the trim? I have a couple wires running up to my lights. is it possible that the former owner placed them there to help hold it. Mine took a lot of routing help to make it so the clips would even go into the holes far enough to lock in.
Are you the original owner? I mean sometimes POs do some mods obviously.
Anyone else have these? Are these standard?

Sorry I can't be of any help

Second Look

IMO, they look like a DIY job using wall anchors.

I'm guilty, you should see all the zip ties I have employed. Right not I am going about fixing those issues that need a little zip tie help.

Didn't help my gas mileage but looks better.

Yep that is where someone has bodged it to glue them in. There should just be a hole in the steel pillar.

After fitting the upgraded LR kit mine has been fine.

Personnaly I would remove the glue and try again as it might be stopping the clips from going in properly.

My attack Plan

I woild make sure I measured the center of each hol as exact as I could, or make a template where the holes should be. Obviously the PO must have had an issue with the holes in some manner, I suspect a rust out hole, or a drilled out hole in the A frame.

If one or more hole is indeed fouled up, I would get the PO repair out and use some type of epoxy, I use JB Weld which can be drilled and grinded out to make the hole(s) basically new again.
Here is the states I would go to an arts supply place and find some thin sheer paper, so you tracings will be spot on and go from there. If you can reach up into the A frame, (I have not tried) then place a small patch of Duct tape on the back side to hold the epoxy in the hole so it can be done in one shot. Then let it set and cure as the instructions say. I think it's 48 hours if you intend to drill/grind.

I am sure there are other ways to skin this cat, but that's how I would do it.

Good Luck

We had this issue driving out of Palm Springs, CA with my wifes D3 the 20 mile hr winds would just pop them right off a real PITA. When the dealer repaired a sun roof leak they did not replaced the pillar properly. I had to buy new plastic clips, but sometimes if its really windy driving out of the California dessert it will pop out. I plan to replace the Cowl and the pillars next year. I think the plastic pillars get warped with the Cali sun and then you just need to replace them. I hate how weak the pillars are on the D2 and D3, The pillars on the RRS from 2005-2009 are screwed in which is better, wish they had done this for the D3 and D4.

That's what happened me in the Mojave. The rubber seal that runs the length of the plastic and presses against the glass was just gently kissing the glass. The new ones are tight against the glass, no wind noise at all now Very Happy

As Discoveringcomfort says, someone has bodged it, possible after finding the footwell full of water due to water getting in behind the trim.

You'll need to take out any remaining plastic bits, clean off the silicon sealant used as a glue, and fit the new clips. The Oblong hole at the bottom should be covered with some Duct tape and the corresponding 'peg' on the cover trim pieces cut off (as per the 2005 technical bullet-in).
