source for rear knuckles?
Hello all,
Does anyone know of a source for refurbished rear knuckles for the D3?
I think I'm in need of refurbished units, to address a couple of issues:
1. rotted away park brake backing plates
2. loose lower rose joints
3. rear wheel bearings at 128k
I'd quite like to do a project of refurbishing the rear end - and tackling the rear hubs with the simple option of refurbished rear knuckles is attractive in comparison to pressing out bearings, joints, replacing backing plates etc.
I'd be doing rear lower arms and spindle rods at same time; the rear upper arms were replaced about 2 years ago, along with the upper rose joints,
Thanks

bump: any ideas?
I did see someone selling these on eBay a year or two ago, but no longer. Also thought AF did them - but can't see them offered on their site anymore.

I don't believe there are rebuilt units available with back plates, bearings and knuckles, so unfortunately you will have to split the hub from the knuckle carrier if you want to replace the back plates.
New carriers are available with with the knuckles fitted, but obviously no bearing as the back plate is not included.
You'll need a substantial press with at least 20t to remove/install the bearings. The knuckles are much easier but don't forget to order the snap ring on the lower knuckle. Use quality bearings such as Timkin and don't be tempted to skimp on this or you'll be doing it all again in a year, perhaps less!
If it's of any help and you're handy with a welder, I have heard of someone cutting off the old back plates and then cut and weld back the new ones, thus saving the bearings. Not my way of doing things, but you may want to consider it as a possibility. Remember though this method need proper welding or the handbrake engagement will buckle the back plate!!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
