V8 Dipstick

Was shocked to find that when I changed my oil that the dipstick had disappeared. I suspect this happened at the MOT a few months ago but the garage denies all knowledge. I bought one for an L322 V8 4.4 (same engine as mine) as I was told they were the same but it appears to be too long. Could someone kindly measure theirs, overall length and oil level positions. Thanks Ian

I’ll see if I have the time tomorrow.

The part numbers do seem identical.

I checked the BMW engine too since the M62 was also a 4.4 liter V8 but the stick part seems to be the same.

Many thanks for useful information. The one I have of a L422 does look different, but is about the right length. it came with a tube so I will look at fitting that too

So, finslly managed to get the tube out and it's different to the L322 one I've got. The disco one is only 10mm in diameter compared to 15 for the L322. Also there is just a small bracket which attaches to one of the cam cover studs. There are 2 tapped holes in the head where I would imagine the L322 tube would fit but there ain't no way it's gonna.

It was from a 4.4 BMW engined 322 the same as in mine, surely the 4.2 is a totally different engine????

(really fancy a 4 with a 5.0 V8)

Your D3 V8 has a Jaguar V8 engine... the beemer petrol engine is an M62. The FFRR had until 2005 the M62 and after that until 2009 (I think) the jag.

the 4.2 is a jag and the 4.4 BMW a BMW - your D3 is a 4.4 Jag variant engine so the much closer engine is a 4.2 jag the BMW only has similarities in the following terms 1. Its and engine, 2. It burns petrol 3. Its fitted to a JLR product 4. its a V8. Pretty much everything else after that is a pure coincidence

Not sure of the lineage of the 5.0 (as I too think that sounds a very good idea) but I suspect is a grown up Jag too

So bought one for the Jag engine and that don't fit either. It seems to end at the block whereas my tube went into the block and had an oil ring sealing it. Made an adaptor on the lathe and it's on and functioning which is a relief.

Thanks for all the help

or a landrover with Jag engine?
