Thoughts on this crossmember

I found a bit of rust on the cross member on the inner rear.

Everywhere other than here is solid as a rock

What’s people thoughts?

Ok as is

Pull the back bumper off and check the whole crossmember. If it’s holed that badly there, it’s not going to be pretty elsewhere...

Thanks DM, under the tow socket cover is good as is everything else I can see. Will get the bumper off and check top and front.

If it is just that area (fingers crossed), what are my options? Patch?

You could patch it, done properly, it won’t affect the structural rigidity of the crossmember

However, I have seen some rust right along the bottom edge behind the bumper, not visible until bumper cover is off...

Hi, i have a simikar issue except mine us rusty inside the socket area, but looks good everywhere else. My pkan, when I have time, is to get the bumper and sills off to see how bad everything is.

DM, I kniw your a bit far for me, but what sort of price would I expect to pay for the crossmember to be replaced?

Paul if you'e taking off the bumper you might as well pop out the l/h rear lamp and unplug the trailer/PDC sockets. You can then easily strip the loomS from the cross member and remove the trailer sockets. This will allow you to get in to the socket cavity with your favourite wire wheels etc and clean up the rust.

It's a common area for corrosion but quite easy to repair Thumbs Up

I'd be cautious of presuming everything is good behind the bumper based on a visual inspection of the towing socket area. The bits people see often get attention to ensure they are ok / look good but it's the hidden stuff i'd want to reassure myself on.

Interesting. Mine had more surface rust but no holes so I'm perplexed on what's caused the hole.

It's only a 15 min job so let's hope its not turned to coffee powder in there. Shocked

If it's any help I have just done my own chassis and after a total clean up I opted for Owatrol Oil, followed by Owatrol CIP, followed by a spray of satin black, and finished with Liqui Moly Bitumen based underbodyschutz. (Spray not schutz gun!) as it is harder and better finish. Thumbs Up

There is a hole there in the centre from manufacture, presumably intended for the mice to set up home and feed on your trailer socket wiring Laughing

So, After getting the grinder out to remove the screws...

I was faced with this, pleasently suprised:

Then a quick Hammerite just to tidy it up after a wire brush

So what do I do now about the rear of it?

That's not so bad at all considering I've seen a bumper removed and the crossmember came with it Laughing

Small patch on the inside now, a clean and lick of paint and you're done. Thumbs Up
