Hi all,
Got to get booked in for the recall but........
Had the vehicle for 3 years so no idea of the previous towing conditions.
Purchased a detachable towbar when I first had the vehicle but noticed play after towing the caravan.
Wasn't happy with the play so fitted a Land Rover fixed towbar.
After a few months the recall letter came.
I Have now noticed after towing the caravan when I go to remove the towbar cover the fixed towbar moves slightly then is stable again until the caravan is towed.
So, do I send it in with-
A. Nothing on
B. With a removable (going to have to make a purchase)
C. With the Land Rover fixed (as is).
Obviously a problem with the rear cross member.
Has anybody else been in my situation?
Thanks in advance.

Thread resurrection time! I had the tow bar recall letter on my my2006 disco3 about 5 years ago. I never got round to doing it. Does anyone know if Land Rover will still honour it?

I would imagine so as it was a safety issue. If you do a DVLA search you’ll probably see that there is an outstanding recall on your vehicle, as could any potential buyers if you were thinking of selling.

They won't honour it. I asked that question, having recently discovered quite a lot of (surface, I hope) rust around the towbar mount and towing electrics on my D3.
The reply from JLR was that because, after consultation with the DVSA, it wasn't deemed to be a safety-critical issue (!), they issued an 'owner notification programme' instead of a safety recall. They reckon they made "every possible effort" to contact registered owners (which is clearly b*llocks, because the D3 has been registered to me at the same address for the last four years, and to its only other owner for its entire life before that).
Bottom line is that even though they have no record of any inspection/work having been carried out on my D3, the 'notification programme which definitely wasn't a recall' expired at the end of December 2018, so they don't want to know. In summary - "we tell you that we tried to contact you even though we clearly didn't try very hard at all, the deadline's passed, and even though we didn't check your D3 and there may well still be a problem with it you can shove it up yer bum..... sir."

Isn’t that far to easy?
A lot of these D3’s are 15 years old..... we can debate about safety ofcourse, but 12 or 15 years is a lot...
Adaybambam Is saying he had a letter 5 years ago.... and did not find the time in 5 years to visit a LR dealer... yeahhhh you can not blame LR i think..
Other cases are maybe to specific, but... again... they are old cars...
I myself think i have an obligation to myself and my motor also... so i check every one or 2 years if there are recalls on my motors... we have a responsibility ourselfs also i want to say, atleast IMHO.. Best regards
Harold

You sort of have a point, but I don't think it would've been 5 years ago. JLR customer services said in their e-mail to me, and I quote, "Land Rover initiated a customer satisfaction program in October 2017 regard the use of a detachable tow bar". So only just over two and a half years ago.
Quote:I myself think i have an obligation to myself and my motor also... so i check every one or 2 years if there are recalls on my motors... we have a responsibility ourselfs also i want to say, atleast IMHO..
Again, you make a good point. But JLR were quite clear that they managed to convince the DVSA that the tendency for a caravan or trailer to detach itself from a Disco 3 in the middle lane of the M6 isn't a safety issue, so they were able to avoid initiating a safety recall (so it wouldn't show up as an outstanding recall on the gov.uk site).

Somehow the dates don’t seem to add up - JLR were actively involved in recalls on the detachable tow bar many years ago...
My D5 was two years old in March and I had a fixed towbar on my previous D4 which I had for three years prior to that. My D4 before that had the detachable tow bar and I had the work done on that under warranty - at a guess, this would have been around six years ago in all... D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

Here it wasn’t even part of the “customer satisfaction” program (as stated earlier by others, it wasn’t a recall). Yes, .fi has the identical removable tow bar..................

JLR were first on the case back in 2014 so it could well have been 5 years ago

I'm only quoting what Neil Lynch, from JLR customer services, told me in an e-mail a few weeks ago when I asked the question...

The official service action was only valid for two years from Dec 2014. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
