18" PD1881's

Hello team, I bought a set of PD's from Barry at compomotive and I'm very pleased of course.

My question is what sort of Mud Terrains can I get on an 18" wheel? The only ones I've found so far are the BF Goodrich KM3 MT and the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx (which is more of a so called "Hybrid Terrain") both in 265/60 R18 size. Which makes them half an inch bigger than the stock 30" diameter.

Are there any other sizes and brands that can go on the D4 without having to start modifying things and cutting bumpers etc...

So just to be clear, I am going to be running two sets of wheels on the D4. I got these:

20" wheels with Cooper Zeon 4XS - Sports on for normal road use, and I will whip these wheels off and put the 18" wheels on to go off tarmac. Incidentally, I don't find the ride very harsh at all with the 20" wheel I think the coopers absorb the bumps really well.

I would suggest ST Maxx are as much as you need. full on MTs will get you into situations that get damaging for a D4/D3. Grabber x3 are pretty close to ST Maxx in terms of performance.

Personally I have Yokohama GO15 on my compomotives in 265/60/18 and could go the next size up with little to no issues so 265/65/18. I'm not sure I'd go wider though as I think that may cause more issues than height.

To be fair a rear locker or Ediff would compensate for most of the difference between an AT and a MT and be whole lot more mechanically sympathetic way of doing things

I had Pirelli ATR’s on my PD1881’s. I never put the 20”s rims back on until I sold.

I think the newer Pirelli AT+ would be a good choice.

you do have to remember the change in gearing that you cause with an increase in tyre size as well 10% is quite significant when you can't adjust gear ratios significantly by changing diff ratios or Transfer box ratios relatively easily

I looked at the X3's but, they are far too big in their offered 18" sizes. For me, the ST Maxx seems a great choice because I've used Coopers now, and I know lots of people who have used them and I've yet to meet anybody who says "these coopers are rubbish." Its nearly as aggressive as a mud tyre but, promising better road manners and far more aggressive than an A/T. So I do like them, but the BFG's just look the business, I love the look of them. And the cost difference between a ST Maxx and a KM3 MT is not much in it...

My D4 doesn't have a rear locker, so, my logic was to get the most grippy tyres I an so that the TC and the center diff lock don't have to work too hard off tarmac.

Very true. A fact that often gets overlooked. I have always been advised to never go bigger than 5% unless you are prepared to modify the ratios accordingly. On my D2 I have Cooper STT pro's which are 245/75 R16 and they are 5.2% bigger than standard size, so right on the upper limit but she doesn't wear those all the time I have a set of 18" wheels which are on standard diameter. But with the D4 there are no diffs on show or an axle that sits lower than the bottom of the car so larger tyres are not, in my opinion at least, that essential because if you need more lift, you can easily get it using a IID on your suspension to +50mm

I looked at that tyre you suggest there, I was quite surprised at the tread pattern, so I have added it to my list of considerations. Quite a beasty looking AT tyre.

They just look superb - what are they like on normal roads / motorway driving? what kind of noise rating do they have?

Not an issue noise wise, can’t hear them with the windows closed, slight hum at 70 audible with windows open. I prefer them to my 20” road tyres as the extra sidewall absorbs more bumps.
Size wise there as tall as you could go on a D4 without butchering the horns on the chassis.

Do you know if they do those tyres in 19s? I'd consider them next time I need to replace the GGAT3s.
Or would their tyre wall height be too much to fit in the space on a D4?

Duratrac are "de ranged" now for the EU I think

Problem is the ideal tyre is often the "RT" type tyres that the US and Oz seem to get but these stupid EU tyre rules mean we just never get them.

10% increase is kind of what I've always worked to as a maximum variation without too much drama - you have to remeber the amount of places a modern vehicle - D2 onwards takes its speed feed from. its no longer just a gearbox or wheel sensor its often a combination of gearbox, wheel and crank calcs to get to a speed and if it can't resolve the calcs it doesn't half get tied up in knots

I stand corrected Duratrac are still available in 255/70/18 but they also have the wrangler adventure in that size too

I've always stuck with the OE LR tyre sizes, so I fitted 255-60-18 to my PD1881's.

Aside from looks, I couldn't see any advantage (for my use) in having non OE size tyres, especially as I could get the tyres I wanted in the correct size.

I'm running the Pirelli AT+ on my RRS in 255/55/19 format. It's a decent enough tyre but it's not a competitor for the chunky tyres being discussed by any stretch of the imagination.

Hi John, that's a lovely combination of tyre and wheel, and you have the same shade of grey as me too. I have to ask, do you have any lift on it? Rods or programmed?

If not, do you have any rubbing issues in access height or full lock?

As far as I know the car is at standard height, it definitely has no lift rods on and I’ve not adjusted the existing settings from when I purchased it. No rubbing issues at all and it drives superb on the bigger sidewall.
Also the tyres from black circles were a bargain £138 each fitted.
The spare fits underneath with the fibreglass shield removed.
