Sanity check - tyre age/storage
Hi,
I just stumbled across a Facebook Marketplace for those nice 2009MY HSE 19" wheels. I offered the guy under half what he was asking because these wheels have "brand new" tyres...but from 2009! They have been stored flat in a basement (a Swiss one so it won't be damp). My common sense says that these tyres have a value of zero, or negative with disposal costs. Am I right to think this? Could these tyres actually be serviceable? The reason I ask is the guy counter-bid me a higher price if he removed the tyres (with a winking Millennial smiley).
So do he know something I don't? Could these tyres be good for a year on the car? Or is the right thing to do to ask the question, "what would go in the insurance report in the event of a crash?".
Thanks,
Andy

UV light is what causes most of the damage to tyres,(I believe) except for wear.
If the sidewalls aren't cracked and the tread is in good condition, then they might/will/should* be okay.
I bought a trailer recently that had been stored brand new and unused in a garage for 10+ years. I knew the tyres were flat and due to the age I thought they would be done, so I bought a new set before going to collect it so I could fit them before driving home. (with the trailer loaded 150+miles) Had to inflate the tyres to get it out of the garage, and found a brand new spare. But on inspection the tyres were in good condition and the spare looked the same as the new ones I had with me.
Tyres are still in good condition and hold air no problem. Side walls have no cracks.

There are many causes of rubber degrading which includes age, salt, UV light, temperature, oxidisation etc etc.
One of the effects of ageing is what is called chain scission where the long rubber molecules actually break down into shorter molecular lengths this effects the elasticity and strength of the rubber.
Tyres stored flat especially on top of each other may create problems with trying to fit them onto rims.
Can not remember the maximum age of a brand new tyre that the tyre association says that tyre shops can sell them but that is only 2 or 3 years old.
Tyre manufacturers recommend changing tyres at about 6-7 years old irrespective of wear
Unless you have X ray eyes and can measure molecular weight without taking samples from the tyre there is no way of telling the actual condition of the tyres.
Have an accident and police/insurance assessor gets involved than you can be deep in the poo.
Those little rubber bands are what keep a heavy expensive vehicle in contact with the ground.
How much is your safety, your family safety complete strangers safety worth?

I agree with what Brendan says mostly, but who here changes their spare tyre every 5 years, irrespective of wear, because its 5 years old?

Changing cars is cheating and doesnt count
Tut, tut so you do not swap tyres around to even out wear?
Must admit I buy new tyres when old ones are about 7-8 years old. On the Defenders they are getting thin at about 5mm, sell them for off road use. Found I get more punctures when tyres are older, sometimes it is slow punctures

Thanks all - you confirmed what I thought. Not at all worth the risk. I actually agreed to pay the guy if he removed the tyres! And now I have 4 brand new Continental 4x4 Contact Summer tyres to put on my brand spanking new set of these:
Next weekend I'll be off to the self garage to fit the tyres and do some other jobs!
