Sidewalls of tyres

Hi

May i ask a daft question please Whistle

I’ve often wondered what would u consider the narrowest sidewall depth of tyre before it becomes classified as a low profile and also detrimental as in ride quality , increased damage from potholes etc etc plse

Once again please forgive me for asking a daft question

Many thks in advance Bow down

The figure 60 is a ratio of the width I think. So it's not easy to state. Well its not an easy question to answer anyway!

When the tyres look like rubber bands you have gone too far Laughing

Before we had all these 'lower profile' tyres, the standard size was an 80 profile (80% of the tyre width as a sidewall height).

In the 70s a 70% aspect ratio became quite common, however personally when Pirelli introduced the P6 with a 60% ratio I personaly consider it to be the first 'low profile' tyre.

So my own view is anything with a 60% or lower is low profile, however this is not necessarily 'law'.

with progress a lot of average cars got bigger wheels.

It's not uncommon to see 40 profile. (which I would call low profile)

I'm sure all average cars are at least 60 now.

Not sure about off roaders

Yep, agree with TM (Dave) as I consider the first "low profile" type to be the 60's (I had 185/60x14's on my Cav SRi and missus's XR3i). Come a long way as my D5 has 285/40x22's as standard

Are we talking % ratio or actual size MM Question

as a 205x60 tyre has a side wall of 123mm
and
a 275x45 tyre has a side wall of 123.75mm

I liked 255x55 (they were on 20" wheels on the RRS) so that was a side wall of 140mm

just an alternative view Laughing Thumbs Up

Hiya

Many thks Bow down

Suppose best way I can explain it is the distance from the ground to the rim , or lack of it as the case may be Whistle

Would u describe that as the height of the sidewall plse

Can often see tyres on 4x4 where u would think one deep pot hole and that’s a goodnight to the rims

Hopefully that sort of makes sense , know I can be terrible sometimes trying to explanation things properly

As always am extremely grateful Thumbs Up

Ps, appreciate it being moved to the correct section , thk u Thumbs Up
