Tailgate Issue - with a twist?
So I've recently been having issues with the boot on my disco 4 and reading all the other articles online they all seem to be around faulty actuators and either intermittent issues or immediate failure.
I've got a slightly different issue and I'm hoping there might be a non-mechanical fix. I can open the tailgate with no issues, but only once per ignition cycle...
So I can go out to it locked now and open the boot fine, however if I close it and try reopen it...no joy, not the actuator doesn't sound and the boot doesn't pop. If I turn the ignition on and back off again it will open again with no issues but again, only the once.
It's slowly driving me insane so if anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

When I had issue on my D3 I had the actuator out and as you say first press full unlock but then each subsequent Press it seems to fade away in power. I was told it's a protection measure to stop damage to the actuator. Once I replaced the unit it was fine and I think although the first press triggered it it was never giving full pull on the mechanism.. Once they deteriorate then the first activation is just enough to activate the lock but the following attempts are too weak .get a new one and you will see the difference MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car

I've just fixed my tailgate which was a dodgy actuator.
As Mark the Spark mentioned, I tried pressing the boot release on my key fob and the actuator moved a reasonable amount. Not enough to open the boot but it moved. Each subsequent press it moved less and less until it did nothing at all. Same for the upper tailgate release button.
I wasn't aware of the safety feature, but a new actuator fixed it for me. For the sake of a new actuator, I'd give that a whirl. If it doesn't fix it, at least you'll be able to sell it on here as it seems a common problem.

So I got around to buying an actuator on eBay which was recommended in another post(a ford one where you can just swap the back plate).
This solved the issue fully and it now opens everytime.
