i think the secret is to buy a good quality sump and follow the torque settings of the bolts. over tighten and it will distort the gasket.

Job done!!
Thanks again to Disco_Mikey for the advice. Transfer box and engine mounts undone, steering column disconnected at the rack, jacks under the transfer box and engine and with a bit of jiggling about the old sump came out and the new one went back in OK. Five litres of oil to fill the 'box and it now changes gear much more readily and much smoother than before. I had similar results when I changed the oil in my D2 auto box.
The old oil was a lot darker than the new and smelled slightly burned. Car has done a bit over 90K miles - so much for "filled for life"!
It wasn't a difficult job but more fiddly and awkward. Would I do it again? Only for a very good mate

And if you had put in a metal sump you would not have had to undo engine and transfer case mounts, would not have had to disconnect the steering column, no jacks and not much jiggling.
Any way job done - I hope it does not leak

Hi, I have a metal pan that replaced the plastic/composite one last year by a local garage and has a weep from the rear of the pan so I decided to get a new gasket and filter and re do it properly. So I was wondering what torque settings to use in tightening the studs and do you coat the gasket or pan with anything as you re fit.

Thanks for the guidance Rangehelper. I have already fitted it (no oil in yet) I should have looked for a reply before I did it. Probably far too tight and squashed the gasket too much. Can't slacken off now then I imagine that would let it leak. It is a real good vehicle , well upkept with masses of history and had a new engine fitted by Pentland landrover at only 38,000 miles and has done 87,888 miles now . I intend selling it with this job done, an oil service and has just had a new accessory belt and new lower tensioner. Make a good genuine vehicle for someone.
