Do not put your trim back on until you have checked it will close and open.
I fitted a new actuator, closed the tailgate and it wouldn't open. The cable was not connected inside the unit. This meant I couldn't prise the trim back and pull the cable to undo the tailgate. I had to break the cover so that I could get the actuator back out and pull the inner cable.

Did cleaning the latch solve the problem?
I think I have the same issue. Rear tailgate suddenly stopped opening 9/10 times but I could hear the actuator trying. I took all the trim off and the cable looks fine and the actuator does seem to be pulling all the way back fine. However when watching the latch it seems really slow to rotate once released.

I just went to the car and the boot wouldn’t open after numerous tries. As the trim is still off, I pulled the cable by the actuator and it unlocked.
Is it likely the actuator then on its way out and the sticky latch isn’t helping?
Would people recommend I just replace both for good measure?

So I ended up replacing just the actuator and that did the trick. It’s seems the latch rotating slowly was
A byproduct of the actuator being on its way out!
