low revs power issue- crossover pipe related? |
|
Hi all,
07 D3 GS Manual.
i have been chasing a low rpm power issue- the D3 is flat below 2000rpm, over that it pulls well and strongly.
it has EGR delete including the butterfly ( checked- no leaks), new intercooler pipes, actuator eased, throttle body o-rings replaced, new Map & Maf, new airfilter, new fuel filter. No black smoke
i am not having any fault codes- apart from one regarding egr b- but that is not fitted.
i do have a split crossover pipe ( on the list to do.......)
would this cause this issue? advice from the facebook D3 page suggest it is the cause, but i am not 100% convinced as it is at the same RPM each time ( 1800-2000 RPM) but i am not familiar with the D3, so i may be wrong.
i welcome any ideas- im at a loss
thanks in advance

Yes both banks of exhausts feed the tubo if you have a split energy will be lost and the reduced pressure will spin the turbo slower Andrew

Ah okay.
So that makes sense.
So lack of gasses reaching the turbo= low revs lag.
Then once the airflow gets to X point, the turbo spools up and pulls the air through ?

The pressure of the exhaust gases spin the turbine which turns the compressor and sends compressed air to the engine via the intercooler. It takes a lot of energy to do this and any energy lost gas a big effect on performance Andrew

Technically it is kinetic energy, who spools the turbo vanes up, so that is why it is from a certain higher rpm “better” Once the flow is there, it “keeps” going… but at lower rpm, doesn’t have enough mass due to the leakage you have… Best regards

It would have to be a pretty impressive exhaust leak to effect the speed of the turbo.
Recent thread about lack of mid range grunt suggested checking the seal on the pipe that goes from maf to the joint by the fan plug.

That is worth a look , although i would have thought that would not be so much of an issue as the the turbo would be pulling air from the air box via that pipe so even if there was a leak, air would still be entering the turbo/engine?
i had a search and the only post that refers to lack of grunt was referring to mid range power but mine is a low rpm issue.
im still at a loss but gaining some ideas from your comments so it is all very helpful

You said, you have this problem, i suggest fix it, before looking for “other” reasons it doesn’t run ok….in that rev range… They never split only 1x1mm Best regards
