The Story of the D3 purchased for a Toy...
So thought I would start a thread of the adventures with my D3.
All started when I purchased a D3, 2005 for £2,700 with a Clean last MOT but no Service history and 170,000 on the clock. Intended use is as a toy and our 4x4 response group.
Here on Ebay... Took a risk as the seller had no V5 so had to wait for that to come through.
First job was a good clean of all seats, floors and headlining. (poor pic)
Next the dash kept saying low coolant, not aware at this time of the level issue, it was time to investigate and see what was going on, at this point I realised that it was actually brimmed, and at a new expansion bottle to the list of 'to do...
Then, realised that there was quite some clonking coming from underneath so had a look under with a friend one night and noticed:
So that also joined the list.
More to come...MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Next job was to get some extra power in the cabin for ambers and other bits I wanted.
Back when I was younger I used to run a sub in the boot of a corsa...
But did mean I already had some pretty heavy power cable left over.
Set off running this into the boot by taking the trim out down the drivers side and using the hole in the dash. From here I could put in a mini distribution board giving me plenty of options for power from the boot.
And at the battery end...
Being a basic spec I had no 12 V socket in the boot so that was next. I wanted one switchable and one permeant. I dont have any pictures but in the light unit in the front I have 4 switches, one for front ambers, one for rear ambers, one for lightbar and one for a switched 12v in the rear... This could be used for anything but mainly for when I stick an amber magnetic light on the roof, to be able to isolate it.
The switch you see in the image is to isolate the voltmeter.
This all got terminated in the fusebox, one feed permanent, one feed switched through a relay.
Having the power in the boot as I do, meant I could add the CTEK charging point here too, which is ideal for where I park.

Next up was one busy weekend,
On the Friday night I wanted to get the CB in, this was mainly for greenlaning as we run Zello for responding.
I didn't have the time to fabricate something like Nasher did, so I went for the wedge it in the gap option which does work well.
This also meant another line into my fuse board in the rear.
As I was driving the car more at this point, and not being too concerned about making holes, I added a breakout hammer for safety on the glovebox.
Saturday...
Saturday Flack made the trip down south for this and a friends D3 to do the cam belts, oil pump etc to give me a but of confidence in them, turns out they had never been done!
Sunday...
It was time to tackle the prop and cure the clanking...No photos in progress but a comparison of parts:

Thanks, im happy with it, the only other thing is airbag light is on and I think that may need a new control module.

Its been a while since any update...
Car has now had a quick service, changed the oil, oil filter, pollen filter and air filter. I don't think it had been done in a while!
Our response group works closely with the local lions club so December so many nights out towing Santa in his sleigh
I also decided to fit a reverse camera for making hitching up easier. Located it just above the rear towing ring.
And then on my second to last night towing the clutch was floppy and I was having to lift it back up after pressing it down, had a look and noticed a hairline crack in the top of the pedal assembly.
Decided to take it to the local indie for a weld job and on the way it got worse.
First trip on a breakdown truck

Sorry about the breakdown - hopefully it is, as you suggest, an easy fix.
What have you done about the belts, and oil pump, if there's no service history? I'd be inclined to change them?
Merry Christmas.

Don’t think of it as a breakdown truck, think of it as a fuel saving opertunity, assuming the truck is going in the right direction.
