Intermittent Reduced Performance message

I've had this "Reduced Performance" message on my 2010 LR4 for about 18 months now. It comes on when I turn the ignition on and stays on but then the next time it seems fine and will go away for months. There is no noticeable reduction in performance. A year ago when it was serviced I asked the technician who plugged in his diagnostic gadget in and it said water in fuel sensor so he changed the fuel filter and sensor and it was ok for a bit but then the message started appearing again intermittently so I mentioned it this time at it's latest service a couple of weeks back and it came up with the same error again - water in fuel sensor so he changed the fuel filter and sensor again and it was ok for a few days then it came back again. And now it's gone again. What's going on??

Hmm I’m not sure if he did. He mentioned the fuel filter and sensor but not the housing. Thanks for the tip.

Actually I just checked the bill and he did indeed change the fuel filter housing too.

You will need the diagnostic codes read which should point the direction. Success here depends on what diagnostic tool is being used! It may well just be a small issue like a blocked MAP / sensor, or an issue with a one of the MAF sensors / air leak etc.

In a worst case scenario you could have a look at the inlet manifolds and see if there is a crack present. The presence of oil or charred / dry oil residues is an indicator. If so a smoke test will then confirm. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I had this issue - I drained the fuel filter which cured it for about 6 months, then it came back just before the service. I've just had the whole housing done and it's been fine for about a month so far.

I used my little diagnogstic tool to clear the Water in Fuel code. 2003 Freelander Commercial 2.0 TD4 (Oslo Blue) SOLD

I used to get the water messages when ever I used fuel from tesco... Steered clear of them and haven't seen it since, oh wife didn't as worked night's there - last year spent nearly 1k on injectors Shocked

I purchased an Autel AP200 OBD diagnostic thing but it’s not throwing up any errors at all even when the Restricted Performance is showing.

Interesting. We tend to use our local garage to fill up rather than a supermarket but I wonder if some premium diesel would make a difference.

Don't know about premium diesel but I'm thinking, as a minimum, it would be worth filling up somewhere else for a bit.
