Require Engine 2.7TDV6 what story with them now
Hi all
Bought a cheap Disco 3 with assumed knackered engine, No coolant in it, expansion tank full of black oil. Assumed oil cooler had failed, engine turns over but sounds like no compression, can turn crank over with ratchet on bottom pulley pretty easily. Have taken cooler out and pressure tested it and seemed fine so think internal crack in block. All that came out bottom radiator hose was what looked like a black cow pat, no coolant, just thick oil sludge (black not mixed by looks)
So two issues, anybody want to suggest what is wrong with that engine
I bought it for few hundred assuming I would need to change the engine so now I need an engine. What is script with the 2.7TDV6 now? can you now get bits to rebuild and hence are the rebuilt engine a safe bet. And if not where is a good place to get an engine these days. I had hoped since Turner engineering now stock cranks, bearing etc they would do a recon but they don't seem to list one.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Does anybody on here have a good engine for sale
Thanks all

The ONLY recon engines I would consider is a genuine JLR unit
A little pricey, but a 2yr, unlimited mile warranty would sway my decision My D3 Build Thread

rebuild
True, but this is an 07 plate and not a minter. Last time I looked a short engine from JLR was like £8k or something silly like that. You reckon a good 2nd hand one is the way to go?
I guess what used to be true is still true and because you can't get parts these engines can't actually be rebuilt properly. However I thought parts availability was better and perhaps they now can be rebuilt.

If you bought it for a few hundred and have the space I would have though breaking for parts would be the best option.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto
Grey 05 TDV6 HSE Auto (Gone)
54 TDV6 SE Man (killed by me )

£4k + VAT
The parts you can get are of "questionable quality"

Yeah but kinda wanted it for myself, hence not wanting to split it, rather fix it. Where is a reliable source of used engines. I am trying to get it all together for about 3k so anybody know where I can find an honest engine. There are plenty out there but its hard to suss what an engine is like when its already been removed from car

Sounds really cooked to me...
I have just had a look for parts to do a rebuild and everything seams to be available
I would only do one myself rather than buying any recon lump online.
For me and that eng i would pull the heads and sump to see if you have usable heads/valves/crankshaft
If not then its totalled IMO
Before reusing anything the heads and crank would have to be pressure tested /crack tested...
This could be a viable block:

Laugh at my coolant
The last picture is what came out of radiator bottom hose, lol
Pressure tested oil cooler (which I thought must have failed( by putting in petrol into one side and holding it at 15 psi for little while, expected bubbles but seems fine, same in other direction
Reckon I need engine but can't actually see what has gone wrong with this one. Do the crack internally or anything
Any suggestion about what to check when buying a 2nd hand engine thats already been removed, its hard to suss alright
Bought it off a mate, it died in his missus. I never got full story about what happened to it as think it was a sore subject in there household, lol

Also is there anyway to get the air suspension to jack up without engine running, major pain to get it onto ramp, had to run it up on blocks of wood to get arms under. She a heavy brute an all

i guess its possible that the coolers gasket failed ??
"Coolant blob"
Its the lack of compression thats most worrying IMO

Turning it with ratchet on bottom pulley is way too easy for a big diesel, can't really feel it compressing at all. Timing is fine. It would be strange to have head gasket failure on both banks and all cylinders though which is making me think its something more serious internally, but what?
