Interesting to see the Velar/Evoque sales. Looks like Velar stole Evoque sales.

Thank you, that chart’s fascinating Thumbs Up

The square rigged (and recognisably LR) FL2 first got supplemented by the Evoque and then replaced with Disco Sport. Subsequently, they both overwhelmed the old car in sales numbers, despite being so much less LR like.

Meanwhile, when the 12 year old D3/4 was replaced by a scaled up Disco Sport, it just started a gradual and recently accelerating decline. A few dedicated LR fans were always going to be early adopters, but why did it start to fizzle out after that, when the DS did so well?

Good to see the more adventurous Velar doing okay Thumbs Up

I changed to D5 and would not go back to D3. The change from D2 to D3 was dramatic, like going from a tractor to a limo, the D3 to D5 was more like evolution and refinement. The only thing I will miss will be the ability to use an IId or type tool.

You like yours, I get that.

But can you suggest why the D5’s sales gradually declined, while the one-size-down, but otherwise similar (yet less advanced), DS dwarfed the sales of its scaled-down-D4 predecessor? I don’t know the answer to that one.

Cos it’s cheap. The first baby step for wannabe LR owners. Believe it or not there’s a massive price difference between affording a DS £31k and a D5 bog standard £48k minimum - a S with halogen head lights, cloth seats, you don’t even get SatNav for that.

To get anything half decent, you have to spend £60k or two Disco Sports in your currency.

SWMBO had two DS, gave them up as a bad job, but I’d also suggest that it’s because owners reject them and get another immediately doubling sales.

They have serious issues with oil dilution, creaking B pillar amongst other things. Wouldn’t touch them with a long barge pole.

My D5 had serious oil dilution because for some strange reason LR decided to fit the single turbo TD6 engine rather than the 306hp SDV6 from the RRS, which seems to be unaffected.

I like the D5 and I think some of the criticism it gets is unfair but even I can see that something has to change, I’m a Disco man at heart and it’s sad to see what it’s become. One of the reasons I’m going to the Defender is that it feels like a Disco.

RM- The DS has always been a big seller, the market for that size of SUV is booming at the moment but the new XC60 was starting to out sell it. The PHEV model is due out in the coming months so that should help sales.

@TD: But the FL2 was even cheaper than the DS so, by that argument, there’s no reason for the DS to outsell the FL2. I like the idea of doubling sales through replacing DS’s while they practiced getting them right Rolling Eyes

@J77: A boom in the sales of compact SUV’s might go some way to explain it. The Volvo’s certainly a handsome and practical car, although it’s too low, claustrophobic and car like for my tastes and the 60,000 mile warranties (extendable to an absolute maximum of 80,000 miles) are the real deal breaker for all Volvos for me.

There’s one reason for the sales figures.

Challenging “marmite” styling and poor value for money. What could possibly go wrong?😆

Don’t think so tbh.

Don’t think the demand is there for the large D5 at that price in this day and age plus there’s a few LRs/RRs you’d consider at roughly the same price.

Why did I get one? Like the height, the boot space and now like the styling more than my old D4, which by comparison is very dated.

I was like many on here until I got one, that changed my mind. Best part is I’d have happily taken something else, but SWMBO wanted one, end of story. Rolling Eyes

Laughing We were the opposite, wife looked at outside and said no! I really like it from the front, side view is 🤔 then......... I don’t think it would have stopped me from buying one, but combined with service it was a non starter. The Porsche I expected her to hate but she loved it from the first go.

Laughing I suppose we all go along with our SWMBOs. Makes for a quieter life.

We are keeping both of our 05 D3's, since now car manufactures are going back to the square design again. D3 is a modern classic. Look how much the New Defender looks like it.

Got to say the D5 looks far superior.

The D4 is old hat now. It was good at the time, but now it looks so dated. It belongs with Beta VCRs, CD players, Sinclair Spectrums and the like. Rolling with laughter
