Removal of air intake grill

Hi All,

Been mega busy at work the last few weeks, so I hope all is well?

A friend of mine gave me the shinny version of the air intake grill today, so I decided to try and fit.

After a number of attempts I couldn't remove the exsiting one, it felt like I was going to bend the wing. Does anybody have any tips on removing this?

Cheers in advance Smile

The removal of the air intake grille is discussed here, it seems to come down to: give it a good yank.

The GTR just says: remove the grille. If you have the replacement grille, you should be able to see how it is kept in place. Probably some clips on the top and bottom?

Also, have a look on http://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/extfree2viewlrprod/index.jsp in the 'Accessory Fitting Instructions' section. Search for 'raised air intake', it will show you the intructions for fitting the raised air intake. That also indicates that you just have to pull the grille....

With mine (both of them) you need to pull up with a bit of force on the centre bar, and then swivel it outwards at the bottom, as though hinged at the top.

Cheers for the advice, I looked at the 'raised air intake' guide andit wasnt much help. I think I will give it a bigger yank in the morning?

Just found this thread after trying to get my grill off.... Unsuccessfully!

Buy the man a beer who suggested pulling up and swiveling out! Thumbs Up

I had the same prob with mine whilst trying to fix the sunroof drain. Could not get it off for love nor money thought the wing would crease i pulled that hard but Mr.Wiggs suggested turning my back on the wing grabbing the vent lifting up and then walking away which believe it or not worked perfectly for me though to be honest i think i did break 1 of the lugs but used abit of glue on the refit and all hunky dorey.

What Glymmer_Man said; it is easier to do if you have your back to the D3. Shocked

AIR INTAKE GRILL REMOVAL TOOL

Having tried to remove the air intake grille using suggestions above and in other posts and failing, I thought I would share my experience.

I bent up a tool for the job in a few minutes using an unwanted metal strip as shown below with 20p coin for scale - 2cm in diameter for those not in UK.

The precise size is not critical but the metal should be fairly rigid and narrow enough to fit between the grille vanes:

The idea is that you need to apply upward pressure to the 2 tabs located at the bottom of the grille as you pull the bottom of the grille outwards:

Insert the tool at the bottom of the grille pushing the foam behind downwards until the short end sits just below one of the tabs. Lift up the long end levering against the foam rubber whilst pulling the grille outwards and it should release as in photo below:

Hold the grille in this position and repeat the process with the second tab and the grille should come out in one piece.

It seems the only way I could think of that did not risk breaking the grille or a least one tab by pulling up and out with some force. Hope this helps someone.

Dave

I did the same as Spinney. Brilliant. No force needed and more importantly, no damage to the vent or the wing Thumbs Up

How did the replacement one fit in? I bought one off ebay and it doesn't fit. The front lower clip is about 1mm too far down, so it won't clip in to the wing. I'm not going to force it, so am on the hunt for a better one.
