Help please broken won't drive and horrible grating noise

Hi, on the way home from work my steering wheel started to wobble from side to side quite aggressively and now making a really horrible grating scraping noise and won't drive

Any help appreciated

Failed CV or driveshaft? Can you use the terrain response to lock diffs to get traction? Must stop buying shiny toys....

When you say making a "really horrible grating scraping noise and won't drive", does that mean it is making the noise even when stationary?

Last 2 times I've been called by friends with steering shake and horrible noises their wheel nuts hadn't been done up properly (by the same garage) and one of the wheels was about to fall off! Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

worth checking the wheels as someone might have taken the nuts out to nick them :-0

sorry there’s no guarantee that this is the cause of the problem but if you can’t drive it but just need to move a bit to get off the road for instance turn the terrain response mode dial into a mode that locks up the centre diff - like rock crawl, this will stop all of the drive heading to the driveshaft that is not functioning correctly - driving any distance won’t be possible or safe

Basically it will need to be recovered to get you somewhere to sort it but it might be enough to get you moved if that is the issue!

hope it’s something easy Must stop buying shiny toys....

Thanks all, borrowed a torch and nearside drive shaft has collapsed! So although not the end of the world it is a pia at this time of year!

If you’ve got the tools it’s an easy job to change the complete assembly with that side raised only so you don’t get any spillage. Just watch the end nut you get with the replacement as there is a newer style which has a different thread to match to what’s on new style drive shafts - also check the bearing for wear on the hub as you will have to pull it all apart to do the job if it’s on its way out. Must stop buying shiny toys....
