What will help reduce the risk of spare wheel being stolen. I am disabled and any work would be done by local mechanic.

An RLD protector is the best option, Ray (of RLD) is a site sponsor.
Would take a mechanic about 5 minutes to fit - it’s that simple. Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Welcome - sorry to hear that.
Is the winch cable there? If the spare wheel has been stolen generally the winch cable is cut.
Spare wheels easily bought here, you will need an RLD protector though, before you load up your new wheel.

Yes you should have a spare wheel located under the boot.
Please note 16my D4 may have adblue fitted. Easy check open fuel filler and see if you have a blue adblue filler cap
If you have just bought the D4 check with dealer not removed for safe keeping.
If it has been stolen then besides a new spare wheel, get a full size one not a space saver you will require
new winch LR093370
spare wheel protector LR078960
full size replacement wheel and tyre
RLD D4 spare wheel protector with adblue
Do NOT use winch without a load on it.
LR078960 is described as a spare wheel protector by LR, is factory fitted and is no obstacle to thieves
