Anyone buying a D4? - Beware! |
|
Latest update on current scams... particularly via Autotrader...
As we know a large number of D4’s are being stolen... they are being rung and having their identity changed using the identity of a salvage D3!
They are then hiding the age of the donor vehicle using a private plate..... Police in the SE have recovered a large number recently with this method...
Unfortunately the number of D3’s in the salvage market is large due to them suffering the engine failures and being non -cost effective repairs.. hence a easy way to get a cheap identity of a Discovery!
Once the thief takes possession of the D3 he will show it with a change of owner to a false name/address. Scrap the D3 for parts and then use the identity and swap that onto the awaiting stolen D4. By then placing a cheap private plate on it will disguise its age.
So to spot them you will see a D4 advertised on sales media...often the colour will be wrong for the year of registration....all vin numbers will look good... because they are genuine and or copied from the original D3..
Do your homework... look at the year of registration on the logbook and compare it to the age of the D4 you are looking at!
Never buy from an unknown person at a third party location..I.e service station, railway station etc etc...always do the deal in the kitchen of the house shown on the logbook with the person who is shown as the keeper!
If you buy one of these vehicles you will lose every penny you paid for it...the vehicle will be seized and the vehicle remains the property of the original losing insurance company.
Be careful out there! Trust your instincts....this is their day job and they are very good at it!

There was a D3 "with facelift" advertised recently on Ebay that had a full D4 Dashboard showing in the pictures along with stating it was fitted with a 3L engine from a later car
Unfortunately even if they get caught they only get a slap on the wrist and sent back to do it all over again.. Must stop buying shiny toys....
