Discovery 4 Roof Rails -
Hi All.
New to the forum so hello! Just a quick question regarding Discovery 4 Roof Rails.
My Discovery 4 is immaculate and I absolutely adore it. In Corris Grey with the diamond cut alloy wheels it's a dream.
However, one part, no matter how hard I try is still not looking it's best.
Roof Rails.
They look like they're water stained and I don't know why.
( I've attached some pictures so you can see the bobbling / water stain marks on them )
I've tried to zoom in as much as i can on the second picture, and if you look closely you can see the speckled what look like dots and marks on them - sorry if the pictures aren't very clear.
They've just looked like they've seen better days, and it almost looks like they've been stained by water or cleaning product, and no matter what I do to try and clean them, they always go back to looking pretty stained and not the vibrant black that they were when they were first new.
Is there any way of returning these to their former glory with some kind of cleaning product? Or getting them back to looking like new and has anyone else experienced this over time?
Sorry for what may seem like a silly question. New to this and before I do anything, just want to know if anyone's been in a similar situation or has any experience with a product or doing something to make them look shiny new and black again
Thanks again everyone.
Hope you're all staying well and safe.

You could try some trim cleaner on them (everyone has their favourite) or they are very easy to remove (three or four torx screws covered with black plastic caps) and then get them repainted...I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Hi Nige. Thanks for the reply. Yeah this sounds like a good shout in the first instance before the slightly more expensive re-painting route. Have you got a good trim cleaner that you know works well that you've used in the past that you think would work well on the roof bars?

Hi Nige that's great thank you and for getting back to me so quick. Are those parts metal or plastic? I've parked up for the night now and can't remember if the long parts which run down the length are actually metal or plastic? and should this make a difference using a 'plastic' trim restorer?

Mine were the same. I used GT85 on them and they look good as new, not sure how long it will last, but if I have to do them each wash, that will be good enough.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I just know that replacing these is going to be so expensive.
Here are some more detailed pictures but it looks like heavy oxidisation.
I'm in Essex. Does anyone know of a resprayer perhaps?
Or any other product ideas? I've attached a few more pictures.

If it were me I’d take them off (T27 torx I think), give them a good rub down with a sander and then use wire wool and respray them myself using either a filling primer and top coat or smooth Hammerite, once they are back up on top they will look good. Get some new plastic cover though as the old ones could be quite brittle.I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Hi Nige. Thanks for the reply. I'm a previous owner of a Defender, and if it were the case on something like that, I think i wouldn't hesitate with ripping them off and doing that.
However, ( for me ) it's a new vehicle and i did pay quite alot - and i'm just trying to think of other options rather than going down that route.
Just called JLR and it looks like it'll be £300+ for replacing the rails
That's gonna hurt if I go down that route

I wouldn't bother replacing. Give them a coat with a suitable trim treatment and just top up now and again. The dealer will happily smile and take your money any day of the week

Hi thanks so much for the message back. Really appreciated.
Is there a trim treatment that you would use / advise on these?
I'm pretty sure they're metal.

GT85 got a good review above. I use Autoglym.
Try a test area on the other side and see if it meets the brief

if you cant them cleaned up ok and the cost of spraying them professionally is a couple of hundred then why not just buy some replacement long or short rails from Powerfuluk ?2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
if your plastic bits are ok just get eBay rails for ~£110. the rails themselves seem as good as more expensive stuff but these cheaper ones are let down by the plastic parts. wait for a warm day to remove your old ones ... maybe give them a warming-up with hairdryer ? should avoid cracking them..
