From what I have read they only built them without climate and terrain control on the pre production units.
Without the vin we have on idea of its build date.

Nothing to do with pre-production models ...if you took time to look at the link I posted you would see that the base 5 seat climate and TR were options

I bought that issue of LRM hoping for some insight - the article is chock full of inaccuracies that even a cursory google would have corrected.

I saw a D3 in California that was a base, with coils and no train response, with the Ford Ranger V6. No sunroof. i actually wanted to buy it.

we used to occasionally get coil sprung five seat models on the management car scheme, cancelled orders or such-like, usually middle-east territory spec', and they were badged as 'S' model but came to HSE plus level (minus the pan-roof) and were much sought after as they were great spec' and, more importantly, cheap on the scheme

I seem to remember that in South Africa base 5 and 7 seaters models weren't made available.
Minimum spec was S.
But they did bring out an XS spec, 5 seater and coil-sprung, that was aimed at the Overlander market.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey (UK)
2008 D3 HSE Izmir Blue- South African Spec. (Zimbabwe)
2005 FFRR SC V8- Java Black
1995 D1 300 Tdi Blue - (Sourced from the UK, shipped to Namibia, driven by me to RD Congo, then Zambia, now retired in Zimbabwe)
