Based on the incomplete data but I would stipulate that:
- D3 2.7 liter engine failures are more related to the original weak oil pump which was supposed to be replaced
- D3 2.7 liter engines do snap a crank every now and then just like any manufacturer’s engines do
- D4/RRS/D5/FFRR 3.0 liter turbo diesel engines snap cranks more than D3s.... because they really snap cranks more often
Your government probably collects statistics on how many D3, D4, etc. vehicles there are on the road (registered) and when they’re being written off. At least ours does. Check the sales numbers from there.
Reading between the lines it seems that the owner is s..t out of luck in Germany, too, should the engine catastrophically fail?

Yes, one of the guys is running with the 5th engine
There are a lot of records in the Net in Germany.
But you never know the statistic relevance of these posts.
The guys who are driving without problems dont write.
But if in China and Korea JLR is forced to do a recall on al TDV6, there must be some relevance behind.

He’s paid for 5 genuine engines? Or 5 refurbished ones from a third party?
Based on the description of what they did in China I got the feeling it’s more like going through the motions than anything else.... ~45 min with some kind of analyzer attached.

Hi Lusitano, it does seem like you are trying to find some excuse to not buy a D4 when really your heart is set on buying one
There are lots of posts on this forum from unfortunate members who have had a crank go, but as you yourself mentioned, the many many people who own a D4 who have had (relatively) good/stress free motoring from their car don't post to say "all is well/no problems". I imagine the same situation in Germany.
I have a D4 which has 162,000+ miles on the clock and am very happy with it, just the usual maintenance/servicing issues.
If you have an itch for a D4 scratch it. As with all second hand car purchases you go in with your eyes wide open and pray to the motoring gods

Anyway, there are some “nice” examples on AutoScout24 and mobile.de of D4 HSEs with 250k+ km and a rather fair price of 10-15k eur. If the engines have made it so far, you might as well imagine they’ll last a few km more
If we didn’t have a silly car tax in this country I’d buy one of those just to have around as spares

Car tax? Try to buy one in Germany! Much expensive.
I you wouldnt always drive on the wrong side, I would buy my cars always in UK
The current Price for a D4, still with 6 speed and 150 000 km is around 15 kEuro
The question is: does it have already the Belt and oil pump maintenance Job done or not? That changes the real price.

New to the forum and posting so not sure if the 2.7 engine has the same crank issues that plaque the lr4 , can anyone help or advise on the best choice 3 or 4 ?

They can all have problems. The D3 2.7 is not immune to crank issues. It also has problem oil pumps on some model years.
The D4 3.0 doesn’t have oil pump issues, but still has the potential issue that results in a snapped crank.
As far as I know, there is no evidence that leads to the root cause of the problem, in either the 2.7 or the 3.0. Some say that the bearing shells slip in the housings, causing the crank to snap, others say that other issues cause the bearings to seize and rotate.
If there was a definitive answer we would know by now. Some engines go for 100’s of thousands of miles without an issue, others fail very early.

Myself I've went with D4 petrol one though if you're doing a lot of kms then consumption is not your friend, +13l/100km (at minimum).
Something what I've heard from LR specialist about D4 and crank problems is that it does happen when one drives +160km/h... which is fairly often possible on German but no other roads.
Maybe that is an explanation to why it is that "aloud" on German forums?
Have you been able to find some stats from government? That would be interesting piece to the puzzle comparing it with other countries and see if there's any deviation. That could support the thesis re speed or in fact higher revs for longer periods of time.

That’s a great help, I am looking at a 09 auto LR3 HSE, it’s done 137k so ripe for extra spends so I am trying to anticipate the problems ( I can feel the titters as you read that ) It has been main dealer serviced most of its life with the 4 most recent dealt with at a main dealer.

Just found out the car has had body damage repairs carried out in 2014 so not 100% convinced it’s the one for me. Will keep looking !

Petrol D4s are nice .
I don't think that the German forums are much "louder" than the UK or SA ones regarding snapped cranks - just take a look at the sweepstake thread from Oval Autos here on the forum. With the 8 speed transmission you normally do not have high RPMs even when driving over 160Km/h. Disco4 V6 SC HSE (MY2014)
