I've used our local hand car wash a few years ago on previous cars, it's one of the 'all american' ones not a real cheapo one in an abandoned garage, bit to be fair by the time I've driven there, queued, waitied to have it done, paid, driven home, and then spent 10 minutes with a microfibre cloth polishing all the missed bits and water marks i might as well do it myself. Keep on top of it and it doesn't take long.
I also find it a good opportunity to scan right around the car and notice any problematic chips, failing seals, worn wipers etc and a good check of the tyres.D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

We have excellent automated car wash places here in the US. State of the art places. $15 for a full wash.
The significant advantage of using them here is that they use high pressure wash and clean on the underside. Given the amount of salt these people put on their roads in the admittedly harsher winters, not doing an underbody wash at least once a week would leave many older cars rotted through.
I put 2 of my 3 cars through these washers and in 3 years have only been completely satisfied. No damage and far reduced corrosion.PAGODA

He's using a sponge
I thought that was one of the cardinal sins in detailing. I haven't used a sponge to clean any car of mine in over 10 years, preferring to use a microfibre or lambswool wash mitt and I am by no means a detailer or car washing perfectionist.Kev

It does seem odd. Although I expect it might be a new sponge per vehicle and he’s being ultra careful. Presumably the car shouldn’t have had any abrasive dirt on it by the time he uses the sponge.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
