I see that you are arriving in Melbourne on the "Red Eye" from Perth on April 2 at 5am 
So you won't have had much sleep 
But then you go on to say that you are due in Sydney on April 4  
Won't give you much time in Melbourne, let alone the G.O.W.
(and you plan to drive to Sydney)

Melbourne to Sydney (via coast, Princes Highway) = 12hours. Only stopping for fuel, once. Did you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room in my D3 for 7,
Climb in here Joe we'll soon be flying,
I can go just as fast with 7.

The reason I choose this route is I'm on the outer south east ~40km from the city. Leave at 4am hit the shire about 4:30pm. Did you think I would leave you crying,

Loved Cape Tribulation when we went - you can do the reef from there - boats pick up from the beach with inflatables and take u out to bigger boats for scuba/snorkelling action. We used these when we were there(about 10 yrs ago)....

At the risk of upsetting residents of Cairns, I'd spend more time further up north of the Daintree versus being in Cairns - but its whatever floats your boat as they say.

Good idea. Anywhere north of and including Eden is idyllic, when the weather is fine. There are so many great views of the Pacific Ocean you will want all the time you can get. Some great towns and Cities at around the halfway point. Did you think I would leave you crying,

We stopped at eden which is about half way and is superb. It used to be big in The Whaling Days very interesting museum. We stayed in a Motel the two times we went that route fabulous fish restaurant right down on the harbour. Could probably find the name of motel if your interested. It had a swimming pool which is always good for the children Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

Hate to be negative, but why not use the Hume??? If you had 3 -4 days to do the trip, sure, coast is great with lots of places to see, especially in NSW.
I am not sure the drive is that enjoyable that it is worth the extra hassle of the coast road, especially if you are not in a vehicle of choice, and you are not able to spend the time to sight-see. The Hume is boring as, but you can get to Sydney in a day without trying too hard, in pretty much anything.
With two days, I would probably rather go over the snowy to Cooma (if you like mountains) and through Canberra (or just do the hume and spend the extra day in Canberra). Melbourne to Canberra direct via the Hume is an easy days drive.
Now I will just go and hide in a corner somewhere..... <*(((<<

Do I assume the Hume is a motorway or freeway? You can see I've really researched this can't you

If you can fit it in, get the Twilight Trip over the Coathanger. You get the best of day and night views across the city and harbour.
If you like to stretch your legs take the ferry to Manly and walk back to the city along the shore and coastal path. Takes a couple of hours (from memory).

Wonky, the Hume is a freeway (mostly) and you can easily cover the 900 odd km's in a comfortable 10hrs, (Note, it has been done in 6hrs back in the days when radar detectors's were around and brains were still being developed.)
Stayed in Canberra last year with my family as we came down from Port Stephens. It was nice to go through parliament house etc ... but I can see the magic in the Great Apline Rd through Cooma as well as the journey around the coast.
Make it 3 days, flip a coin for the coast or mountains and avoid the Hume. What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

Hume is a boring drive as you miss most of the towns now. If was on holidays and had the time I would like to take in the scenery. Having driven in the Uk on the motorways and on the A roads I know which is more relaxing and they even use the inside lane on their motorways. You wont remeber the Hume but you will remeber the coast. You can even wave to Norto as you pass by!!! Take the road less traveled.
