Viscous fan - Can anyone help |
|
Hi
Disco 3 V8. The viscous fan is running like a good un, but, using IID tool the fan speed reads 0. The coolant temp is between 92 and 95C. Temperature gauge is reading normal (i.e. in middle or slightly below centre of gauge).
Air con all works normal.
Any clues as to what may be the issue?
Thanks

Hi Ivan
I can only speak of my D2 days regarding the viscous fan. Can you stop the fan by hand? and I don't mean shove your hand in there! I mean use a rolled up newspaper and see if you can stop the fan, If you can it sounds like the viscous bit has given up the ghost and that's a new fan job. I must admit that I found no difference to the engine temp. or running of the engine with the fan removed, not that I am suggesting you should do this.
Not really been much help have I?
Hope you get it sorted

Thanks.
I have decided to replace the radiator, thermostat and it's housing and temp sender and for good measure a new fan. I am going on holiday next week to France so want to be 100% sure it's not going to cause problems.

Is there an issue? the viscous fan will rotate all the time but with no force until the temperature rises - the gauge seems normal? What seems to make you think there is a fault? I don't know about the iiD readings

A new fan seams excessive.
Press the air con eco button on and off.
If the engine fan changes note the it’s working

The important thing to change is the black plastic coolant bridge between the heads and connects to hose.
These do crack

The issue is that the viscous fan is running full belt but, the reading is 0. The fan should not be running as it is. I brought this car in Queensland Australia and never encountered this (it's run under much hotter temps that we get here). Something is not quite right and I want to get to the bottom of it.
Coming home tonight all was well and the fan speed read normal (between 800 and 1500 rpm). After a while (about 20 mins of traffic with speeds between 5 and 50 mph) the fan speed read 0 and the viscous fan kicked in, this is not normal behaviour.
Re the pipe to be changed can you give me any idea of where it is?

Have you had any work done recently that would involve disconecting the fan electrical harness. When the dealer changed the timing belt on mine first time around when they reconnected the connector one of the pins was pushed out and the fan ran constantly, presumably in safe mode. I pulled the connector apart straightened the pin and relocated it properly. Problem solved.

On first engine start up the fan should run at full speed for about 20 seconds with a distinct roar and then drop back to very low speed, set your Iid tool to live values and check the readings. It is possible that due to its previous hot climate it has been modified to run continuously, could a fuse have been removed? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

It is normally OK and has not been modified for hot climates. It does roar at stat up as expected. When driving hone all is well until about 20 mins into the journey. My IID tools is showing fan revs at between 800 and 1500 as expected. The fan revs then drop to 0 and the viscous fan kicks in.
Have been running around in it today and no problems whatsoever, no roaring of the viscous fan and the temp was reading 30C outside. Car goes in tomorrow for the new parts as mentioned earlier. Will see what happens.

We get lots of problems with the electric/viscous fan hubs at work on the trucks, either wiring or an internal fault, can also chuck on the engine light for good measure.

Right, I had the radiator replaced, the fan replaced and the thermostat housing and associated bits replaced and all is now well. Viscous fan revs are displaying properly even when the fan kicks in.
Just got back from holiday in the Italian/french Alps and all worked fine even in temps of 32C. The fan did come on a couple of times but I did expect that as I was climbing a steep hill in low range with the temp outside at 32C.
