| Who changes all 4 tyres all the time |

Hi,
Costco will only replace all 4 tyres on LR which is a shame as the front two need replacing but the rear two dont. I understand the logic behind it but not sure I believe it.
So open question does everybody else always replace all 4 tyres at the same time?

Yes, I like all tires matching, this gives better road holding. IMO.
The two with some tread left can be put away for spairs to match up later or take on 4wd trips.
Rotating tires regually is the go  then they all wear the same.

I recall my Audi manual recommended all tyres being changed at the same time and not to rotate them... it was a Quattro and apparently according to Audi, could cause premature wear to the drive train if you didn't adhere to their advice... not sure if its myth or fact though.

then take your business elsewhere, somewhere that will do what the customer requires. I've changed all 4 when required, other times just a pair. If you had a bad (unrepairable) puncture, the norm would be take you new (hopefully) spare, buy one new tyre (for the scrap one), put these two new ones on one axle (rear), and the worn one back as the spare.

I have known of not changing all four tyres on some 4 wheel drives to cause drivetrain failure,
i have never come accross a problem with Land Rover's and was not aware of it Being a recommendation from Land Rover 8)

I was told the same by Just Tyres last year, mentioned it to the service manager at my local LR dealership and he said that there was no need for this at all. The only thing that mattered was that the tyres on the same axle were within a couple of mm of each other. They actually replaced my front 2 tyres under warranty in the end so I ended up with 8mm on both fronts and 4mm on the rear 2. 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

Just as a peace of mind I always have all four changed , so they are the same make , I don't feel happy with different tyre manufactures. And you know they have been balanced properly . 1960 Morris Minor

I had a noise on my car which land rover traced to a tyre. They replaced all 4 even though there was only one at fault and they all had over 5mm.
I always replace all 4 on my subaru.
anything 4 wheel drive should have tyres replaced at the same time. Its all todo with rolling radius and diff wear.
much cheaper to replace 4 tyres than a diff. D3 V8 SE AUTO

So
you have a puncture on your (say for now) 18/20k miles tyre, which has maybe 3mm of tread left, and you get out and fit your spare which has never been on the road with 8mm of tread on it, and happily drive off. Does your car complain, make odd noises, No.
I, like most of you, like to keep matched (in brand and wear) tyres, but I dont think its the big deal that the tyre guys make it out to be - dont forget, they're trying to SELL tyres.

I can't believe that having tyres with different wear on the front or rear would make a difference to the diff. Surely it would only matter if the centre diff was locked as you get transmission wind up. They are designed to take into account variations in rotation between front and rear, it happens everytime you turn a corner and to a much greater extent than a couple of mm wear on a tyre.
Maybe somebody can confirm this ?

If you have too great a difference in rolling radius [esp on front] the D3 detects this and puts it in safe mode.
ie in auto, it'll only change up to 4th - command shift needed to move to 5th & 6th.
I experienced this when I had a puncture and put on my just legal spare.
Cann't say what would happen on a manual though! ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Costco told me this is down to good old Health and Safety  - but then suggested I remove the two wheels requiring new tyres, take them in and they would fit two tyres to these no problem. So their H&S policy becomes my risk when I have to jack a car up on the drive (or Costco car park  ), leave it on blocks and humph 2 heavy rims in and out of another vehicle.
They are cheap tho but I've found the final balancing can be questionable though this is probably just down to one machine / operator.

Does this mean that all the other suppliers and fitters are breaking the law 
I think not
Health and safety gets spouted as as reason for too many things not getting done these days  Its not the height of the fall but the sudden stop at the bottom that hurts!!
