Right I’ve spoke to the garage today and they say they’ve checked the suspension and all is ok so they tracked it and the play in the steering wheel was acceptable as they’ve seen a lot worse! So I told them I’m not happy with the rack and that’s why I wanted everything checking so it can only be the rack. They said that’s fine and what ever the out come they will re check the tracking free of charge
I’ve took the rack of my other D3 that feels great in the steering and fitted it to the problem D3 and I must say it’s better but I believe I still have a smaller amount of play still so the only thing left I haven’t changed is the upper steering column as the rest from the track rod ends up is newMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

Is not the upper part of the column a single piece so play would be movement in the wheel fixing to the column - nut not tight

Mine has done the 'tight' steering thing since Sunday. Ordered a new, genuine LR lower column which arrived today. When I opened it and felt the new UJ, it had a click, or notch on one of the bearings. It feels like the bearing has been 'brinelled' during assembly. Anyway, I decided not to fit it, and to ask for an exchange. Hopefully will get the new one tomorrow.Richard

Issue with new lower steering column
Went out this morning to fit the new lower column, genuine LR part.
All going very well, old one came off easy enough, new one went back in easily. So far so good I thought.
Did up the upper bolt, turned the steering to get to the lower bolt, started to do it up.
It didn't seem to be getting tighter, almost felt like the thread was stripping, so I pun an M8 nut on the back just in case. Still wasn't gripping the steering rack shaft properly, so tightened a bit more, then the bolt sheared off
Took it all off again to find the lower split clamp deformed to the extent that the thread and the spotface the bolt head bears on were completely out of line.
I think the bore of the clamp has been machined wrongly, not allowing it to clamp the shaft properly.
Any one else experienced similar?

I’ve been checking and I’ve found my rear right bearing has a bit of play in it, no way would that contribute to the play in the steering? Could it ?Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

Mine was the exact same issue but mine was a britpart
So bit the bullet and got a genuine one with a higher tensile bolt M8x35 washer and a nylock nut problem solved after a really nice steering specialist looked at it and pointed it out to me. The play was Minimum and couldn’t be seen moving that’s why I thought it was the rackMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

Got a refund from warranty (Land Rover) for the failed new shaft. I did wonder if they'd try and reject it. I was going to suggest they try fitting it to a car!Richard
