Best way to store wheels and tyres long term
I need to store some wheels and tyres for up to a year / a year and a half maximum.
Apart from storing them in a dry, dark and cool environment and rotating them occasionally, would you store them vertically, or horizontally and stacked 4 high?2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I don’t have a tyre/wheel rack. So stack carefully and rotate a few times a year.

OK, is not as long as you want but I have always stored my winters/summers and extra sets of tyres horizontally stacked 4 or 5 high, spaced off the floor on a pallet but with a flat peice of ply covering it (so that the tyres arent across the edges of the pallet planks if that makes sence). Given this is for anything from 4 to 6 months its never seemed to be a problem. They are in the dark and cool end of the garage.

I made H shaped spacers out of 2x2 wood, I put one on the bottom then one between each wheel, these allowed me to stack my off road wheels horizontally , metal to metal as it were. No load on the tyres at all.Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

From Uniroyal:
Quote:
The most important thing to avoid is cracking on the tyre wall. This happens when tyres are left unused for a long period of time. When tyres are in motion, anti-UV oxidisation chemicals keep the tyres flexible. However, when they’re static, these chemicals are not distributed evenly and dry patches appear.
You therefore need to minimise exposure to UV while your tyres are in storage. Once you’ve cleaned them – using a mild soapy detergent – and left them to air dry, use a tyre marker to mark their original location (left front, right rear etc.). Then wrap each tyre in an opaque black bag. You can buy tyre protection bags from motoring retailers or use black refuse bags. Try to extract as much air as possible before sealing them.
Store your tyres off the ground, ideally on a tyre rack, in a cool, dry, clean environment. Keep the tyres away from any heating or hot water supplies.
If your tyres are still connected to their wheels you can store your tyres horizontally on top of each other, sidewall to sidewall. If the tyres are being stored without tyres, align them vertically, with their sidewalls touching. Remember, to give the oxidisation chemicals the opportunity to reach the entire circumference of the tyre, you should rotate the tyres regularly, a bit at a time.

I lay my winters horizontally with a piece of cardboard between each wheel and a double thickness for the one against the floor. No problems so far when they’re fitted. I also mark each wheel where they have come from so they go back on the same hub.

Thanks again for the input. I’d just stacked them all horizontally before I read that Stew had kindly volunteered to “rotate them” for me 🙄2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

“Here” tyre storage companies (we change mandatorily to winter tires and back to summers) store the tires stacked horizontally on top of each other. Nothing in between. The better places (= ones charging premium) hose down/wash the tires, the economy places just store them as is.

Must be one of the nicer places.
I got similar bags for my tyres when we purchased the Volvo.
