I had one as a management car 'because I could', it was 'the' car to have if you could get one. Really poor choice for me in reality as I was 'commuting' from Sutton Coldfield to Cowley every day at the time (a few months short of the M40 being open so a 200 mile x-country route via Stratford and the Cotswolds ) and real world consumption was about 22mpg and it hadn't the ability to get past old men in hats driving Allegro's or caravans on the country roads........
However, it was absolutely brilliant, a real "world-changer" vehicle for me, it was a 'G-WAC' plated vehicle (but not one of the official launch/press vehicles) and was a nice metallic blue with the 'compass' graphics down the side and the removable canvas bag that unzipped off the centre console. It had no central locking and windy-up windows but it stopped people in their tracks and had a crowd round it whenever parked up

Had a 1,2,3 and currently have a 4.
Unless a D6 arrives in the next few years think I might have to jump ship.
As good as a D5 might be it’s just not to my taste
Of course a new Defender might fill that gap.Discovery 4 HSE

I had the 2.0 litre petrol one, five door by then. It was the R800 2.0 16v engine shoved into a Disco' as a tax-break car. It was, beyond doubt, the worst company car I have ever had. They could hardly give them away, let alone sell them. They were officially available for about five years but were single figure sales after about the first 18 months, mostly to Italy...
It actually sounded like a V8 with a nice 'burble' to it but it couldn't pull the skin off a rice-pudding, a slight incline would see a cruising speed slowly decline until, foot to the floor, it would be struggling to maintain 40mph top whack. I seriously doubted I would make it up 'Telegraph Hill' on the A380 once and even cars towing were overtaking me
Power was around 135bhp and the official 0-60 time was around 14.5 seconds but I really doubt it actually did that, struggling to get to 60 sometimes Torque was non-existent in a car-derived engine not designed for the application. Real world fuel economy was low to middling teens, the 3.9 V8 would do more than that.
