It's tyre time.. any comments, experiences from locals. |

Well, after around 25K the OEM Goodyears are getting low on tread. I am looking around for something that will last longer next time around. Have been to my local Goodyear dealer and they have suggested Cooper HT Plus in 265/60 x 18.. slightly larger in OD. (Might make my speedo read accuratley... it's fast now)
I notice that Goodyear also make a Wrangler silent armour with Kevlar in an AT pattern in Disco size. Cooper tell me that they will have an ATR to suit the 18" Disco in the second quarter of this year.
While I would like to change to AT type tyres.. I did find that the Cooper ATR's on my last car didn't always stop anywhere near as quickly on wet bitumen as HT tyres. (Gave me a couple of heart in mouth moments) The ABS would kick in.. and then I was a passenger and no longer a driver!!!
So what have fellow forumites found in their choices in replacement tyres in 18"?

I have the Cooper HT plus ones. Will definately last longer than the OEM Manglers. Very slippery on wet limestone! and not good in mud (to be expected)
OEMs were not a bad balance between off and on road but the wear on then is lousey.
The front is slipping in the wet on left corners at the moment. Could be a wheel algnment/steering/ bush issue. Goes to dealer on monday.
Only happened recently so probably not the tyres.
I would have gone for ATs if they were available at the time.
General grabbers have had a good rap.
Yokahama Geolanders are an option too.
Ther was a post with link to off road tyre reviews dunno where though.

If you can get your hands on General Grabbers AT2, they are fantastic. I had them on my Rangie, and a very good all rounder. Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

I have had the Cooper HT+ on for 14 000 km.
All that was available at the time.
I don't think that they grip as well as the oem (dry bitumen)
I am not impressed with the wear with the Coopers, the rears were badly cut up doing the Tanami and the Gibb
last year
I will certainly be (trying to) claim under my 60 000 km Cooper Tyre Warranty.
I have another trip coming up in April, might have to put General Grabbers on for that

Ive got Mickey Thompson ATZ 245/70-17
and they are fairly good everywhere except in mud Pete

I agree these tryes are great. Arctic Frost Discovery 3 TDV6 SE, Active Rear Diff, Adaptive Head Lights, Tow Pack, Ebony Leather, Roof Rails, Mantec Guard. Tasmod Stainless Sill plates. Grabber AT's. Home made mud flaps. Side Steps back on until the next time.

Can you give more details:
- grip on tar in dry
- grip on tar in wet
- grip on dirt road
- how do they go climbing steep, rocky, dirt tracks
- what's wrong with them in mud
- how do they go on sand
- puncture resistance ?
How would you compare the aggressiveness of the tread to other tyres (eg. BFG AT)
My only other option is Cooper ST in 245/70R17, but worried about all the de-lamination stories.
I would rather robustness over aggressiveness I think...

Can anyone tell me if by fitting the larger 265/60R18 tyres does that interfere with the Disco3's auto gearchange points? The reason I ask is if larger tyres are fitted to the DiD Pajeros the auto will not hold 5th lock and keeps dropping back a gear which increases fuel consumption dramatically. Apparently it must be to do with adding extra load on the gearbox sensors and the box thinks it's climbing a rise all the time.
Has anyone fitted the new Yokohama Geoloanders, if so how are they for noise compared to the OE Goodyears?

Disco 3 Overall Reliability |

HI All,
Getting very close to ordering a new TDV6 SE but am still a little uneasy regarding overall reliability. I keep reading threads about "this is giving trouble" or "thats not working correctly", on reasonably new vehicles.
Are there owners out there that are having a trouble-free run and are they in the majority or minority?
Things like park brake issues and flat batteries causing brake lockups & being locked out of the vehicle, door seals needing replacing but are not under warranty are all a concern! Do I have reason for the concerns?
I have just written off my Pajero last Sunday evening and the NRMA guy I was talking to said "mate, stick with the Pajeros, even the newer Discos are still having problems with their electicals and gearbox issues"!!
Really appreciate any feedback, both positive and negative.

Gear box issues? Thought that was Toyota.
never hada problem with EPB at all.
Newer models are proving very reliable.

I was similarly concerned - but 13000 kms later no probs and loving it .....
HSE TDV6 Silver. Roof rails, Adaptive lights, electronic diff. Now its time to add a few extra bits..... Dual Battery setup, Rhino Roof Racks, UHF / VHF radio, ARB bar and winch, custom storage..by me ... Now trying some Grabber AT2's.

I think you'll love a D3 over a new Pajero.
I went out to buy a new Paj in December 06, and test drove a D3 to cross it off the list. Just fell in love with the D3.
My only problems were a new tailgate dust seal fitted a few weeks ago (mine let some dust in on long dirt road trips) and my only real drama was a compressor failure about 2 weeks ago. The delaer told me that they have only had 3 failed compressors on post June 06 build cars. (mine is August 06).
It really is a good thing. I can understand the service man and his outlook.
However, I still recall my grandfather complaining that his new Land Rover didn't have a place for a crank handle. What if the battery dies. My late father was horrified that cars started to move to electronic ignition in the late 70's. Thank God they both didn't live to see EFI and automatics controlled by computers.
Go take a long drive in a D3 (we had one for a weekend) and then try to give it back
