Mikey,

Based on your experience, what would you say that the % chance of the average D4, or D3, V6 failing in any one year are?
 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!

It would seem that all MY's are at risk, from 2010 up till 18MY
I stopped at 18MY, as I have not heard of any 19/20MY having gone pop yet...

All that said however, to the best of my knowledge, not one D4/RRS/405/494 that we have serviced has suffered a crank issue...

And for the record, we only use OEM oil filters and Petronas oils, and before that, Comma oil Thumbs Up

Do you notice cars coming in for services with low oil? As in, when you drain the oil out, is there generally less than say 5.5l, or are they generally all coming back in relatively full?

Most of them are underfilled. Not all, but some come in with worrying little oil in them...

We had one D4 in for a steering column, lower wishbones and brakes to be replaced. Was dropped off the night before, we started it up to bring it in and it rattled for a good 10 seconds. They dont even rattle that long after an oil change

It took 3.5 litres to bring it up to the maximum level. And it wasnt due a service...

I do wonder if some cases of the shells spinning causing crank failure is all down to the oil.

Either people not checking the oil enough or using the wrong oil.

In your example above, assuming the car has a DPF, the small amount of oil that's left will also have diesel in it as well, diluting the oil, so it could be well out of spec. Obviously complete speculation!

I just find it really bizarre that no one has managed to pin point the issue and fix it. It almost appears random which i just don't understand how it can be.

The majority of the public don't check the oil levels enough, let alone understand oil specifications. If you're buying a used vehicle, who knows what oil has been run through it.

But i also know people have had engines fail who have had services every few thousand miles, and dealer serviced etc, so it does seem random!
